New Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for Women Theatre Composers!

Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award, 2015

The Ziegfeld Club is proud
to announce the inaugural

Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award!

The winner will receive a $10,000 grant and professional mentorship by a prominent musical theater composer or lyricist.

The award will be given to an emerging female composer-lyricist, or team of composer and lyricist, who demonstrate financial need, professional initiative, and outstanding artistic promise in musical theater songwriting.

Described by The New York Times as one of “New York’s pioneering feminist institutions,” and “Broadway’s best kept secret,” The Ziegfeld Club, Inc. is among the first not-for-profit organizations in the Broadway community. We were founded in 1936 by Billie Burke who formed our Club to “keep alive and cherish the memory of Florenz Ziegfeld” and to help women who had performed in her late husband’s world-famous Follies who had fallen on hard times later in life.

Today, the Ziegfeld Club is expanding its legacy of helping women in musical theater by establishing the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award.

Of the 11 new plays on Broadway during the 2014-15 season, one was written by a woman. Of the 10 new musicals, one had a book written by a woman.

Fun Home was only the third Broadway musical in the last quarter-century to have its book, lyrics and music all by women. That’s one musical every eight years.

During the 2013-14 Broadway season, 68 percent of the audience was female.

All these numbers demonstrate an urgent need to support women in theatre now. At the Ziegfeld Club, we have been devoted to this mission since 1936. Now in the 21st century, one of the ways the Ziegfeld Club can fulfill its mission is through the establishment of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award.

The recipient of the 2015 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award will be chosen by a selection committee of industry professionals, and will be presented at a reception in New York City hosted by the Ziegfeld Club in October 2015.

The Ziegfeld Club wants to find talented, undiscovered women in musical theatre songwriting. Please help us spread the word about this incredible opportunity!

Applications are currently being accepted through July 26th, 2015. For more information on how to apply, please click here or contact info@theziegfeldclubinc.com.

Statera Conference July 31-August 2

INAUGURAL STATERA CONFERENCE  |  JUL 31 - AUG 2, 2015

Join us for the inaugural Statera Conference in Cedar City, Utah from July 31 to August 2, 2015. Meet with theater professionals from all over the country for three days of networking, socializing, experience-sharing, theatre-going and more! The Statera conference is all about gender balance and our goal is to take action to bring women into full and equal participation in the American theatre.

WHY ARE WE MEETING IN CEDAR CITY, UTAH?

We have strategically chosen to meet in the center of the country as a way of engaging both coasts as well as the wide swath of regional theaters scattered across the states. Cedar City, nestled in the middle region of the country, is called Festival City for good reason. The rich arts community is in the midst of great growth with the building of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts, which will include the Southern Utah Museum of Art as well as the new outdoor Engelstad Theatre at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Cedar City is also home to the Neil Simon Festival, Off the Cuff Improv Center and various art galleries, with access to Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks in just a short drive. Cedar City's great artistic growth make it the perfect place for Statera's inaugural conference.

WHO WILL BE THERE?

We're excited to announce that Mary McColl, Executive Director of Actors' Equity Association, will be giving our keynote address. You'll also have the opportunity to attend small group breakout sessions moderated by noted professionals, attend world class theater at the Utah Shakespeare Festival and network with people from every corner of the theater profession. The conference is open to men and women alike: administrators, designers, educators, technicians, advocates, spouses, etc. The goal of this conference is to initiate and support action by individuals, organizations and institutions whose stated goal is to work towards gender balance in the arts. All are welcome!

"...its incandescent musicality brings this hand-clapping

universe to life." The New York Times

LET'S GET THE RHYTHM invites the viewer to explore the history of hand-clapping games around the world. Through wars and migrations, across language barriers and oceans, young girls connect with each other through thousands of variants-ancient as they are global-the film chronicles these rhythmic and recreational practices. Guided by three eight-year-olds from diverse cultural backgrounds on inner-city playgrounds in New York City, the film is a charming and beautiful survey with universal insight into the budding social mind and of the empowering impact of the practice on the lives of women. The charm of their personal insight is complemented by archival footage collected by Alan Lomax and observations by folklorists, academics, musicians, ethnomusicologists and cognitive neuroscientists. LET'S GET THE RHYTHM is a delightful homage to the beauty of the beat and to storytelling among young girls and is a necessary film for Anthropology and Sociology courses.

Now Available! INSIDE HER SEX

"Female sexuality and shame is an endlessly fascinating subject...filmmaker Sheona McDonald takes a raw and comprehensive look at the issue." -YouBeauty.com

While we live in a highly sexualized society, the messaging around female sexuality is distorted and rife with shame. INSIDE HER SEX is a "fearless and important film" that bravely and unabashedly explores the uneasy coupling of eroticism and embarrassment through the courageous stories of three women: Elle Chase, a popular sex blogger, Candida Royallethe creator of Femme Productions Inc., a feminist, adult film company designed to speak with a woman's voice and Samantha Allen, the ex-devout Mormon and current gender, sex, and tech writer for The Daily Beast

Still today, youth will see sex, and particularly female sexuality, portrayed in media and pornography without access to comprehensive sex education. Filmmaker Sheona McDonald wants INSIDE HER SEX to help change that, beginning a much needed conversation around female sexuality and shame. This film is the perfect discussion starter for women studies, sociology, sexuality, media and communications classes.
