Playwright Festivals/Calls for Entry


Midtown International Theatre Festival - Special July Short Play Lab (July 25-27, 2014) - Seeking submissions for the first Short Play Lab being presented as a part of the MITF. Plays should be 1-10 pp. You produce the play whether or not you live in New York. The SPL provides the theatre. This Lab will take place in the WorkShop Theater Company's Jewel Box, 312 W. 36th St. 4th floor, New York, NY 10018. There are no fees, and the Short Play Lab keeps the door. Every production gets two performances. Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.) The most popular production in each program receives a cash prize of $75. Panglossian Production’s Pop Up Theater (August 2014, Williamsburg, VA) - Pop Up Theater is an annual performance of original ten-minute plays. Plays range from fully staged scenes to book-in-hand readings. The intent is for artists to get a work on its feet, in front of an audience, and see where it goes. The theme of each Pop Up Theater allows artists to find inspiration for a new story, focus an idea that has been stewing for a while, or dust off an old scene for a new life. The plays can be monologues, poems, skits, excerpts from larger plays, musical pieces, movement or dance, even performance art – as long as they fit the theme. You provide the work, and they help you with directors and actors. The performance will be staged for a live audience and will be live streamed on-line via HowlRoundTV on August 31. Wordsmyth Theater - New Play Reading Series (2015, Houston, TX) Wordsmyth Theater is now accepting submissions for their 2015 New Play Reading Series. They are looking for full lengths and one acts. There will be six plays read throughout the year. One slot will be reserved for a Houston playwright; another for a bilingual play (English/any other language.) South Street Players - Tri-State Theatre Festival (October 17-19, 2014, Spring Lake, NJ) - South Street Players (southstreetplayers.org) is seeking short (20 minutes or less), original, one-act plays for its 4th Annual Tri-State Theatre Festival. Seeking original comedic and dramatic one-act plays from playwrights currently living in the Tri-State area only (NJ, NY and PA). Plays must be 20 pages or less. Submissions of longer than 20 pages will be declined for consideration. No royalties or payment will be provided to playwrights should his or her play be chosen for the festival. The New York New Works Theatre Festival (First round August 20-28, 2014 NYC) - Premiering this August, accepting submissions of short plays (30 minutes or less). Global Age Project at Aurora Theatre (February, 2015, Berkeley, CA) – Seeking plays that celebrate fresh, forward-looking visions of global significance for a festival of staged readings. The Global Age Project is a discovery and developmental vehicle established to encourage playwrights to address life in the 21st century and beyond. Seeking forward-thinking unproduced work from both established and emerging playwrights, the festival celebrates the diversity of perspectives, styles, voices, concerns, and stories that make up the world today and provides a development opportunity for plays that directly respond to our complicated present and our possible future  1 submission per playwright. Manhattan Repertory Theatre’s One Act Play Competition (Sept 10- Oct 2, 2014) - Seeking fully produced one act plays  (cast, directed and ready to perform) 7 minutes to 20 minutes in length for MRTʼs FALL ONE ACT PLAY COMPETITION. Non-equity only. NO FEE to apply, $150 fee once accepted. $1,000 prize for Best Play. Each play will be given four performances, plus two extra performances if chosen to advance to the finals. **Athena Project** (March 20-April 5, 2015, Denver, CO) – Seeking submissions from Female playwrights for its Plays In Progress Series. Four new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, designers, cast and workshop presentation during the festival. One play from the 2015 PIP Series will win a full production to be produced in March of 2016 festival, based on a combination of audience vote and board input. **Shakespeare’s Sister Fellowship** (Four dedicated weeks in 2015, orientation meeting in December 2014) The Shakespeare’s Sister Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a female playwright to be supported by three extraordinary institutions over the course of a year while she writes and develops a new play. In addition to a cash prize of $10,000, the playwright will receive residencies at three geographically distinct institutions—AROHO, Hedgebrook, and the Lark Play Development Center—each one providing a different kind of support at successive stages in the playwright’s process. The fellowship seeks to make possible for the playwright a breakthrough into the kind of new work she would not have had the freedom or the resources to create otherwise.

Wildclaw Theatre - DEATHSCRIBE Festival (December 2014, Chicago, IL) - Each December, WildClaw produces the DEATHSCRIBE Festival of Horror Radio Plays. DEATHSCRIBE is an open submission, international festival and writing competition. Writers may submit up to two radio plays to DEATHSCRIBE in any given year. Five scripts will be selected from all submissions. After being selected, there will be an opportunity for the authors to refine and revise these scripts (if deemed necessary) in collaboration with WildClaw Theatre Company. There will be a “Best of the Fest” award, with the winner chosen by a celebrity panel of judges on the night of performance to receive the coveted Bloody Axe Award. The Yale Drama Series (New Haven, CT) – Seeking original, unpublished, full-length plays written in English. No translations, musicals, or children’s plays. The winner will receive the David C. Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of the manuscript by Yale University Press, and a staged reading at Lincoln Center Theater. The manuscript must begin with a title page that shows the play’s title, a 2-3 sentence keynote description of the play, a list of characters, and a list of acts and scenes. The Good Ear Review – Dedicated to publishing monologues that share a moment in time with the reader (and eventually, the audience). Seeking original monologues in all genres from established and emerging playwrights from across the globe to post on website. Playwrights may submit up to 3 monologues of 600-1000 words each. Monologues must be submitted electronically in the body of an e-mail; no attachments. Include setting, time, character, and any necessary set-up. NEA Art Works Grants – Supports the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts with grants from $10,000-$100,000 to organizations. Open to Arts Education projects that have lifelong learning in the arts as their primary outcome. Innovative projects are strongly encouraged. This deadline is specifically for school-based projects that are directly connected to the school curriculum and instructional program. Activities may take place in or outside the school building at any time of day, including after-school and summer programs. Application must be submitted through the NEA website; allow ample time to prepare the application and deal with technical difficulties that frequently arise on the site. Alliance for California Traditional Arts Grant Programs – Three programs to support folk and traditional arts, defined as art forms that are learned as part of the cultural life of a group of people whose members share a common heritage, language, religion, occupation, or region:


Apprenticeship Program – Encourages the continuation of the state’s traditional arts and cultures by contracting master artists to offer intensive, one-on-one training to qualified apprentices. A master artist is someone who is recognized as an exemplary practitioner of a traditional art form by his or her community and peers. Prospective apprentices should demonstrate investment and developed skill in the specific art form they wish to continue learning. Master artist and apprentice must apply together. Each $3,000 contract will support a 6-12-month period of concentrated learning. Living Cultures Grants Program – Funds nonprofit organizations and organizations working with fiscal sponsors to support exemplary projects in the traditional arts in California. Eligible projects include public presentations; workshops and gatherings; equipment and materials purchases; conservation, creation or acquisition of traditional arts items; intergenerational classes or educational programs within a community; documentation of traditional arts, skills, ceremonies, beliefs, or performances; media, web, and print publications; professional and leadership development; and endangered language acquisition projects when carried out within the context of traditional art forms. Limited to organizations with budgets under $250,000. Awards are generally limited to $5,000; a small number of grants of up to $7,500 may be awarded to projects that demonstrate significant impact on a particular cultural tradition. **Open Meadows Foundation Grants** – Funding to individuals and to nonprofit organizations for projects that are led by and benefit women. Grants of up to $2,000 support projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls; reflect diversity of community served by project in both its leadership and organization; promote building community power; promote racial, social, economic, and environmental justice; and have limited financial access or have encountered obstacles in search for funding. In addition to general grants, Open Meadows has 6 special targeted funds: the Jeanne Meurer Indigenous Women’s Fund; the Ellen Dougherty Activist Fund for Young Women; the Edie Windsor Fund for Old Lesbians; the India Fund; the Patsy Lu Fund for Women’s Music Projects; and the Susan F. The Emily List Fund for Performing Arts Therapy – Supports theatre, dance, and music projects aimed at helping the sick and disadvantaged in the interest of making their lives better and brighter through the performing arts. Grants of up to $1,000 to fund instruments or equipment for a music therapist working in a hospital; scholarships for young people to attend theatre camp; travel expenses for a chorus or theatre group; space for a dancer working with disabled or elderly people; payment for an instructor teaching arts to patients; tickets for groups to attend theatre performances they otherwise could not… and any other proposal along those lines. Grants are focused in the Pioneer Valley and at Mass General Hospital. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis year-round. UMass New Play Lab Paid Residencies (March 24-April 5, 2014, Amherst, MA) – Aims to develop two exceptional new scripts per year in cooperation with visionary playwrights. Two playwrights will be chosen for concurrent 10-day residencies during the mainstage production period of their scripts as public staged readings directed and dramaturged by UMass graduate students and performed by UMass undergraduate actors. **Plum Alley** - Curated crowdfunding platform focused specifically on supporting women entrepreneurs, women in the arts and media, and organizations that benefit women and girls. Their website provides resource material on creating a successful project, the benefits of crowdfunding and how it works on their platform. They have also teamed up with Flexcel Networks, a female-founded third party company that specializes in flexible assignments for vetted professionals: if you choose, they can connect you with professionals ready to aid your project in the field of video, communications, marketing/PR, and project management. They follow the ‘all-or-nothing’ project model, project creators will only receive funds they’ve raised if the funding goal has been met within the dictated timeframe. A total 7.9% fee applies for Plum Alley and credit card services; the project creator will see 92.1% of total funds raised. Visit https://plumalley.co/en/projects.

USA Projects – Crowdfunding platform open to artists who have received a grant or award from a distinguished arts organization (see website for a list of qualifying organizations and artist eligibility requirements and application). Projects are based on an “all or nothing” model in which artist sets a minimum fundraising goal and a deadline by which to raise the funds. If artist meets or exceeds goal, she/he receives all the donations; if not, donors are not charged and artist does not receive funds. USA Projects has a 75% success rate (compared to 45% on similar platforms), and raises matching funds so that each project receives a direct contribution of an average of 16% from USA Projects. Artist receives 81% of every dollar pledged, with 3% going toward credit card and bank processing fees, and the rest going toward USA Projects for administration and reinvestment in projects. All donations made through USA Projects are tax-deductible. USA Projects provides each artist with a personal coach for support and guidance through the fundraising process. Ann Arbor Film Festival (March 19-24, 2015, Ann Arbor, MI) - The AAFF provides at least $20,000 in cash and film stock/services to more than 20 filmmakers, serves as a qualifying festival for Academy Award® nomination in the short film category and provides touring opportunities for select filmmakers. The Athena Film Festival (February 5-8, 2015, Barnard, NY) - Now in its fifth year, the Athena Film Festival — a celebration of women and leadership — is an engaging weekend of feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world. Also, in an attempt to remedy lack of gender parity in film, the Athena Film Festival has created the Athena List, an annual slate of between 3-5 screenplays with female leaders or strong female protagonists that have yet to be made into films. Screenplays can be written by any gender, but must focus on women’s leadership. **Citizen Jane Film Festival** (November 7-9, 2014) - Accepting submissions for the 2014 festival: films in all genres and short or feature length.  The CJFF programs films made by female filmmakers in all stages of their careers--from first time filmmakers to pioneers in the industry.  If accepted, filmmakers are strongly encouraged to attend the festival in person to participate and collaborate with other female filmmakers throughout the weekend. Beyong the festival in the fall, Citizen Jane continues to support and celebrate female filmmakers through an ongoing film series at Stephens College throughout the year.  They host artist in residences to screen and discuss their films to the public, and they also visit classes and lead workshops. **LUNAFEST** (Ongoing events nationwide, limited submission window) - Since 2000, LUNAFEST has showcased the work of more than 110 women filmmakers and raised nearly $1.75 million for women’s causes throughout North America. They seek unique stories in short film format created by, for and about women. If your film is chosen by the LUNAFEST Board of Advisors, you get a $2,500 award. If chosen it will also be screened by audiences at more than 190 venues throughout North America and serve as vehicle for raising awareness and funds for causes that women care about. $20 Fee, $15 Student Fee, made out to the Breast Cancer Fund. The San Francisco Film Society/ Hearst Screenwriting Grant - The SFFS/Hearst Screenwriting Grant is given to a mid-career screenwriter who has been a practicing writer for at least five years and who has previously written a minimum of one feature screenplay. The grant is open to writers residing in the United States whose project expresses both a unique personal perspective and an artistic approach to the subject. Priority is given to writers whose previous short or feature screenplays have been produced as an independent film.

Alliance for California Traditional Arts Grant Programs – Three programs to support folk and traditional arts, defined as art forms that are learned as part of the cultural life of a group of people whose members share a common heritage, language, religion, occupation, or region:

Apprenticeship Program – Encourages the continuation of the state’s traditional arts and cultures by contracting master artists to offer intensive, one-on-one training to qualified apprentices. A master artist is someone who is recognized as an exemplary practitioner of a traditional art form by his or her community and peers. Prospective apprentices should demonstrate investment and developed skill in the specific art form they wish to continue learning. Master artist and apprentice must apply together. Each $3,000 contract will support a 6-12-month period of concentrated learning. Living Cultures Grants Program – Funds nonprofit organizations and organizations working with fiscal sponsors to support exemplary projects in the traditional arts in California. Eligible projects include public presentations; workshops and gatherings; equipment and materials purchases; conservation, creation or acquisition of traditional arts items; intergenerational classes or educational programs within a community; documentation of traditional arts, skills, ceremonies, beliefs, or performances; media, web, and print publications; professional and leadership development; and endangered language acquisition projects when carried out within the context of traditional art forms. Open to Arts Education projects that have lifelong learning in the arts as their primary outcome. Innovative projects are strongly encouraged. Santa Fe Art Institute (1-3 months, year-round, Santa Fe, NM) – Residencies between 1-3 months for creative artists in all fields, including film and media artists, performing artists, and writers. Organization provides: housing and studios, including access to the College of Santa Fe’s performance and moving-image arts facilities and the Institute’s digital media lab and exhibition/installment space. **Her Film Project** - Her Film Project is a global project to support women filmmakers.  Their mission is to serve as a global advocate for women filmmakers and their work.  They regularly feature interviews and Q+As with women filmmakers, articles on their films, details on special screenings, crowdfunding roundups, film reviews, and articles about issues affecting women in film on their active Her Film Project blog. They award grants in the areas of film marketing and film festival travel for women filmmakers, as well as sponsor a Filmmaker-in-Residence program for filmmakers at any stage of their projects as a way to further support women filmmakers (directors, writer/directors, director/producers). They provide monetary support as a sponsor for women's film festivals and special awards for women filmmakers and partner with film festivals and organizations to support filmmakers, specifically women filmmakers, women's voices, and women's stories, and advocate for increased representation of women in film. **Plum Alley** - Curated crowdfunding platform focused specifically on supporting women entrepreneurs, women in the arts and media, and organizations that benefit women and girls. Their website provides resource material on creating a successful project, the benefits of crowdfunding and how it works on their platform. They have also teamed up with Flexcel Networks, a female-founded third party company that specializes in flexible assignments for vetted professionals: if you choose, they can connect you with professionals ready to aid your project in the field of video, communications, marketing/PR, and project management. They follow the ‘all-or-nothing’ project model, project creators will only receive funds they’ve raised if the funding goal has been met within the dictated timeframe. Additional Opportunity for Screenwriters
UCLA Student Searching for Plays - Searching for a short 5-20 page play or screenplay to adapt and produce into short films this Summer, in preparation for a senior thesis for a UCLA student. Ideally she is looking for scripts that can be shot in the Los Angeles area and on a smaller budget.
