Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival (October 8-12, 2014) - The Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival’s mission is to provide a cultural alternative to the mainstream commercial film experience and to celebrate, promote, nurture and teach non-fiction filmmaking. Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival (September 4-7, 2014, Martha’s Vineyard, MA) - International Jury Competition: 10 films will be selected from worldwide entries and screened at 2014 Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival short film showcase. Jury members will select winning film for jury cash prize and presentation at Closing Night program on Sunday, September 7th. The festival is about exploring other cultures/people of the world. AFI Fest (November 6-13, 2014, Hollywood, CA) - Submissions are now open and filmmakers are invited to submit narrative, documentary, experimental, animated and short films for consideration for the next edition of AFI FEST. The American Film Institute's annual celebration of international cinema from modern masters and emerging filmmakers, AFI FEST features nightly red-carpet galas, special screenings, conversations and tributes. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes AFI FEST as a qualifying festival for both Short Films categories of the annual Academy Awards®, and AFI FEST is still the only film festival in the United States to hold the prestigious FIAPF accreditation, assuring a high standard of quality and reliability for the international film community. AFI FEST is Los Angeles' longest running international film festival and has been bringing the best in world cinema to the film capital of the world since its launch as FILMEX in 1971. **“KIN” Women’s International Film Festival** (November 1-5, 2014, Yerevan, Armenia) - The festival’s goal is to promote women’s creativity, establish a network between woman filmmakers from different parts of the world and give hand to a better understanding of different cultures and each other. Ann Arbor Film Festival (March 19-24, 2015, Ann Arbor, MI) - The AAFF provides at least $20,000 in cash and film stock/services to more than 20 filmmakers, serves as a qualifying festival for Academy Award® nomination in the short film category and provides touring opportunities for select filmmakers. All submitting filmmakers will be notified regarding acceptance by approximately February 13, 2015 with the email address provided at the time of submission.  Please add mail@aafilmfest.org to your contact list to ensure receipt of notification.  Please contact Ellie White at submissions@aafilmfest.org if your email changes prior to notification. SlamDance Film Festival (January 23-29, 2015, Park City, UT) - The Slamdance Film Festival is dedicated to new filmmakers. They accept films in every genre, on any topic from every country around the world. The festival program is selected from 100% blind submissions and they do not disqualify any films based on premiere status or date of completion. Their mission is to bring attention to the most talented emerging filmmakers, showcasing their work in the media frenzy of festival week in Park City, Utah. This year, filmmakers may submit through Withoutabox or our Alternative Submission Form. A hard copy application form is also available upon request. The Athena Film Festival (February 5-8, 2015, Barnard, NY) - Now in its fifth year, the Athena Film Festival — a celebration of women and leadership — is an engaging weekend of feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world. Also, in an attempt to remedy lack of gender parity in film, the Athena Film Festival has created the Athena List, an annual slate of between 3-5 screenplays with female leaders or strong female protagonists that have yet to be made into films. Screenplays can be written by any gender, but must focus on women’s leadership. **Citizen Jane Film Festival** (November 7-9, 2014) - Accepting submissions for the 2014 festival: films in all genres and short or feature length.  The CJFF programs films made by female filmmakers in all stages of their careers--from first time filmmakers to pioneers in the industry.  If accepted, filmmakers are strongly encouraged to attend the festival in person to participate and collaborate with other female filmmakers throughout the weekend. Beyong the festival in the fall, Citizen Jane continues to support and celebrate female filmmakers through an ongoing film series at Stephens College throughout the year.  They host artist in residences to screen and discuss their films to the public, and they also visit classes and lead workshops. **LUNAFEST** (Ongoing events nationwide, limited submission window) - Since 2000, LUNAFEST has showcased the work of more than 110 women filmmakers and raised nearly $1.75 million for women’s causes throughout North America. They seek unique stories in short film format created by, for and about women. If your film is chosen by the LUNAFEST Board of Advisors, you get a $2,500 award. If chosen it will also be screened by audiences at more than 190 venues throughout North America and serve as vehicle for raising awareness and funds for causes that women care about. $20 Fee, $15 Student Fee, made out to the Breast Cancer Fund. Ford Foundation Freedom of Expression Just Films InitiativeSupports documentary projects that address urgent social issues and help us understand our past, explore our present and build our future, with the goal of expanding the community of emerging and established filmmakers by helping them realize their visions and reach audiences. JustFilms focuses on film, video and digital works that show courageous people confronting difficult issues and actively pursuing a more just, secure and sustainable world. Initiative funds will be distributed through three distinct paths: partnerships with major organizations such as the Sundance Institute and ITVS; collaboration with other Ford Foundation grant-making programs where the introduction of documentary film could help draw attention to an issue or advance a movement, and an ongoing open application process. Funding Opportunities 

The San Francisco Film Society/ Hearst Screenwriting Grant - The SFFS/Hearst Screenwriting Grant is given to a mid-career screenwriter who has been a practicing writer for at least five years and who has previously written a minimum of one feature screenplay. The grant is open to writers residing in the United States whose project expresses both a unique personal perspective and an artistic approach to the subject. Priority is given to writers whose previous short or feature screenplays have been produced as an independent film.

Alliance for California Traditional Arts Grant Programs – Three programs to support folk and traditional arts, defined as art forms that are learned as part of the cultural life of a group of people whose members share a common heritage, language, religion, occupation, or region:

Apprenticeship Program – Encourages the continuation of the state’s traditional arts and cultures by contracting master artists to offer intensive, one-on-one training to qualified apprentices. A master artist is someone who is recognized as an exemplary practitioner of a traditional art form by his or her community and peers. Prospective apprentices should demonstrate investment and developed skill in the specific art form they wish to continue learning. Master artist and apprentice must apply together. Each $3,000 contract will support a 6-12-month period of concentrated learning. Living Cultures Grants Program – Funds nonprofit organizations and organizations working with fiscal sponsors to support exemplary projects in the traditional arts in California. Eligible projects include public presentations; workshops and gatherings; equipment and materials purchases; conservation, creation or acquisition of traditional arts items; intergenerational classes or educational programs within a community; documentation of traditional arts, skills, ceremonies, beliefs, or performances; media, web, and print publications; professional and leadership development; and endangered language acquisition projects when carried out within the context of traditional art forms. Limited to organizations with budgets under $250,000. Awards are generally limited to $5,000; a small number of grants of up to $7,500 may be awarded to projects that demonstrate significant impact on a particular cultural tradition. **Open Meadows Foundation Grants** – Funding to individuals and to nonprofit organizations for projects that are led by and benefit women. Grants of up to $2,000 support projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls; reflect diversity of community served by project in both its leadership and organization; promote building community power; promote racial, social, economic, and environmental justice; and have limited financial access or have encountered obstacles in search for funding. In addition to general grants, Open Meadows has 6 special targeted funds: the Jeanne Meurer Indigenous Women’s Fund; the Ellen Dougherty Activist Fund for Young Women; the Edie Windsor Fund for Old Lesbians; the India Fund; the Patsy Lu Fund for Women’s Music Projects; and the Susan F. Eastman Fund for Environmental Activists. Organizational budget should not exceed $150,000; small and start-up organizations strongly encouraged to apply. NEA Art Works Grants – Supports the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts with grants from $10,000-$100,000 to organizations. Open to Arts Education projects that have lifelong learning in the arts as their primary outcome. Innovative projects are strongly encouraged. This deadline is specifically for school-based projects that are directly connected to the school curriculum and instructional program. Activities may take place in or outside the school building at any time of day, including after-school and summer programs. Application must be submitted through the NEA website; allow ample time to prepare the application and deal with technical difficulties that frequently arise on the site. Fleishhacker Foundation Small Arts Grants for Bay Area Arts Organizations – Grants of up to $10,000 in support of programs in a range of disciplines, including dance, film and media arts, interdisciplinary arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. Grants may be used for artists’ fees, production costs, exhibition/installation costs, and projects that advance the organization’s overall artistic development. Open to organizations with annual budgets between $100,000 and $750,000 that are based in and offer programming in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. **Zion’s Bank Smart Women Grants** – Grants up to $3,000 to female residents of Utah or Idaho to support “the efforts of everyday heroines who strengthen women, children, and their communities.” Grants are awarded in 5 categories, including arts and culture. Submit application form (available on website), mission statement (how your application relates to the mission of the program), statement of purpose (clearly describe the focus, goals, and general direction of work or project, including artistic objectives), detailed description of project (including an explanation of how the grant will advance development of your work), proposed use of grant funds, plan for measuring performance and results, financial data and need (including list of other sources of funding), and supporting documents and work samples. Santa Fe Art Institute (1-3 months, year-round, Santa Fe, NM) – Residencies between 1-3 months for creative artists in all fields, including film and media artists, performing artists, and writers. Organization provides: housing and studios, including access to the College of Santa Fe’s performance and moving-image arts facilities and the Institute’s digital media lab and exhibition/installment space. Residents are encouraged to participate in the Institute’s outreach program, including public presentations of work, workshops, and individual critiques with students in the community. Residents are responsible for residency fee ($1,000 per month), refundable key deposit ($150), meals, travel, and materials. Most artists receive financial support from the Institute. **Her Film Project** - Her Film Project is a global project to support women filmmakers.  Their mission is to serve as a global advocate for women filmmakers and their work.  They regularly feature interviews and Q+As with women filmmakers, articles on their films, details on special screenings, crowdfunding roundups, film reviews, and articles about issues affecting women in film on their active Her Film Project blog. They award grants in the areas of film marketing and film festival travel for women filmmakers, as well as sponsor a Filmmaker-in-Residence program for filmmakers at any stage of their projects as a way to further support women filmmakers (directors, writer/directors, director/producers). They provide monetary support as a sponsor for women's film festivals and special awards for women filmmakers and partner with film festivals and organizations to support filmmakers, specifically women filmmakers, women's voices, and women's stories, and advocate for increased representation of women in film. On their website you can find a list of women's film festivals all over the world, more than 100 across 30+ countries. They maintain and update an extensive list of resources for filmmakers seeking information on how to increase their opportunities and improve their entrepreneurial efforts within the film industry. **Plum Alley** - Curated crowdfunding platform focused specifically on supporting women entrepreneurs, women in the arts and media, and organizations that benefit women and girls. Their website provides resource material on creating a successful project, the benefits of crowdfunding and how it works on their platform. They have also teamed up with Flexcel Networks, a female-founded third party company that specializes in flexible assignments for vetted professionals: if you choose, they can connect you with professionals ready to aid your project in the field of video, communications, marketing/PR, and project management. They follow the ‘all-or-nothing’ project model, project creators will only receive funds they’ve raised if the funding goal has been met within the dictated timeframe. Additional Opportunity for Screenwriters
UCLA Student Searching for Plays - Searching for a short 5-20 page play or screenplay to adapt and produce into short films this Summer, in preparation for a senior thesis for a UCLA student. Ideally she is looking for scripts that can be shot in the Los Angeles area and on a smaller budget. No immediate compensation will be made for the script, however if your script is selected, there will be coordination for such if the movie makes money down the line.  You will receive an imdb credit as the original writer/creator, and an individual slide on the final film credit reel, as well as a copy of the film.  If you are interested, please send samples of 3-4 pages as well as a full synopsis to Nerris121@yahoo.com.
