Playwright Festivals/Calls For Entry
The Yale Drama Series (New Haven, CT) – Seeking original, unpublished, full-length plays written in English. No translations, musicals, or children’s plays. The winner will receive the David C. Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of the manuscript by Yale University Press, and a staged reading at Lincoln Center Theater. The manuscript must begin with a title page that shows the play’s title, a 2-3 sentence keynote description of the play, a list of characters, and a list of acts and scenes. Please enter the title of your play, your name and contact information (including address, phone number, and email address), and a brief biography (optional) where indicated in the electronic submission form.  Plays should be typed and page-numbered and should follow professional play format. Reston Community Players New Play Project (Monthly Readings, Reston, VA) – Seeking bold, passionate, innovative new scripts for public readings followed by talk-back sessions with the audience, author, performers, and other personnel. Several authors will be invited back for a second public reading and talk-back, this time with some minimal production elements such as costumes or set pieces. Eventually, one script will be selected for a full production at the Center Stage at the Reston Community Center. Authors will receive a royalty for each public reading. Mobtown Playwrights Group (January 10-18, 2014 and March 28-April 5, 2014, Baltimore, MD) – Seeking new works by Baltimore Area writers. Scripts will be read in back-to-back weekends of public readings. The Mobtown Players will supply actors, directors, and marketing acumen. **Open Meadows Foundation Grants** – Funding to individuals and to nonprofit organizations for projects that are led by and benefit women. Gerbode Foundation and Hewlett Foundation Playwright Commissioning Awards – Seeks to fund the creation and production of new plays by California playwrights. Works are to be commissioned and premiered by Bay Area nonprofit organizations, which can apply for grants of $50,000 each. Resulting works will have their world premiers in Bay Area public performances between June, 2013-June, 2015. Proposed commissions in any genre will be accepted. Applicant organizations must be nonprofit and based in the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, or Sonoma. Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Grants – Supports artists and organizations in Manhattan with three grant programs:
Creative Curricula – Grants of up to $5,000 to teaching artists and arts organizations for in-school partnerships. Applicants must be working in partnership with Manhattan public schools. Supports projects providing in-depth opportunities for students to create and experience the arts at any level K-12. Projects must be semester-long, in-classroom programs that focus either on sequential, skills-based arts study incorporating one or more art forms, or on integrated study of arts and non-arts subjects, collaboratively taught by classroom teacher(s) and teaching artist(s).
Fund for Creative Communities – Grants of up to $5,000 to artist community partnerships and nonprofit organizations. Supports projects and activities that enable Manhattan communities to engage with the arts. Projects that increase access to arts and cultural activities in communities with high need are encouraged. Open to nonprofit organizations, and to artists working in partnership with a community-based organization or a fiscal sponsor. Projects must include a public component.
Manhattan Community Arts Fund – Grants of up to $5,000 for individual artists and small nonprofit organizations. Supports artists and arts organizations that have little access to government funding sources, in the hopes that the grant will help recipients eventually leverage financial support from other sources.

New England Foundation for the Arts Native Arts Program – Supports Native American artists and organizations in New England and nationally with two types of funding:
National Native Artist Exchange - Supports teaching, learning, and collaborating in traditional and/or contemporary Native art forms through travel from one region to another in North America. American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian artists residing in any of the fifty United States may apply. The applicant must identify a collaborating artist and specific project as part of the exchange, which must be beneficial to both artists. Grants of up to $1,5000 will be awarded per exchange. Acceptable expenses include lodging, meals, economy-class travel, materials, and other direct costs of the artist exchange. Deadline: Rolling (requests must be received no later than 2 calendar months prior to departure date)
Kleban Award – Given annually to both a librettist and a lyricist, each of whom receives $100,000, payable in 2 annual installments of $50,000. Applicants must EITHER have had work previously produced on a stage or in a workshop performance OR be or have been a member or associate of a professional musical workshop or theater group, i.e., ASCAP, BMI Theater Workshop, or the Dramatists Guild Musical Theater Development Program. Previous Kleban Award winners or individuals whose work has been performed on Broadway for a cumulative 2 years prior to date of application ineligible. Maine Theater Fund at the Maine Community Foundation – Distributes at least $50,000 per year, generally as grants in the $2,500 – $5,000 range, although larger awards may be considered to support both professional and community theatres in production and presentation of live theater in Maine. Goal is to strengthen and sustain theatre performance throughout the state. Guggenheim Fellowships – For advanced professionals in all fields, including the creative arts (in the field of performing arts, artists must perform their own original material to be eligible), to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions. Grants are to individuals only (but are not available to students) and have been averaging $43,200 for U.S./Canadian fellowships – amounts are adjusted to the needs of the fellows, considering their resources and the purpose and scope of their plans. Appointments ordinarily made for one year and always for at least six consecutive months. NOTE: The Foundation has suspended its Latin American and Caribbean competition for the year 2013; check back next year to see if program has resumed. Recology Artist in Residence Program (2014, San Francisco Bay Area, CA) – Provides local artists working in all media the opportunity to create art using materials they gather from San Francisco’s refuse. Four-month residency includes 24-hour access to a 2,000-sq. ft. art studio, a monthly stipend, and an exhibit at the end of each residency. Open to professional artists who reside within one hour’s drive of San Francisco; students ineligible. New Dramatists Playwright Residency (New York, NY) – Provides playwrights with time, space, and tools to develop their craft so that they may fulfill their potential and make lasting contributions to the theatre. New Dramatists provides selected playwrights an artistic home amongst a diverse group of other emerging and mid-career writers, along with a self-guided laboratory, for seven years. The residency is free to playwrights. Open to playwrights living in New York City and the surrounding tri-state area, as well as playwrights outside the tri-state area who are able to demonstrate the ability to spend time in NYC and make use of residency services while participating in a dynamic artistic community.
