NORA EPHRON DIES AT 71 WomenArts joins with many others to mourn the passing of Oscar-nominated screen writer and director, Nora Ephron this past Tuesday. Ephron was one of her era’s most successful screenwriters and filmmakers, making romantic comedy hits like “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When Harry Met Sally” and "Julie and Julia."  The Washington Post commented, "As a woman in the male-dominated movie business, Ms. Ephron was a rare 'triple-hyphenate' as writer, director and producer. But making movies for and about women was a battle, at times. She observed how, to male studio moguls, 'a movie about a woman’s cure for cancer is less interesting than a movie about a man with a hangnail.'" CANNES FILM FESTIVAL UPDATE Thanks so much to all of you who signed the Women and Hollywood petition about the lack of women directors at the Cannes Film Festival. Also, thanks to Kay Hardy Campbell for pointing out that although there were no women in the main competition at Cannes, there were important films by women in the sidebar screenings.   In particular, we would like to congratulate Haifaa Al Mansour, the first female Saudi filmmaker, on the showing of her film, Wadjda, the first full-length feature ever shot entirely inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  Wadjda tells the story of an 11-year-old girl growing up in the suburbs of Saudi capital city Riyadh. Her dream is to get and ride a green bicycle, a treasure forbidden to women in the restrictive Islamist state. The Ruth Morley Design Award Luncheon will be held on June 7, 2012 from 12:00PM to 2:00PM at Sardi's Restaurant.

Ann Roth will receive the Ruth Morley Design Award.

Ann Roth won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for The English Patient, and received the following Broadway nominations: 2011 Tony Award (The Book of Mormon), 1997 Drama Desk Award (Present Laughter), 1986 Tony Award (The House of Blue Leaves), 1985 Drama Desk Award (Design For Living), 1979 Tony Award (The Crucifer of Blood), 1976 Tony Award (The Royal Family), 1976 Drama Desk Award (The Royal Family), 1965 Tony Award for Best Producer of a Play (Slow Dance on the Killing Ground). 

Rachel Reiner will receive the Lucille Lortel Award.

Rachel Reiner is the Managing Director of Resonance Ensemble, a theatre company dedicated to producing classic plays and new work inspired by the timelessness and universalism of the classics. Her production company, Rachel Reiner Productions LLC, has also produced numerous plays off-Broadway.  Additionally, she is the Senior Manager of Membership Services and Education Programs at The Broadway League, where she has worked since 1996. Rachel graduated summa cum laude from the Theatre Department at Brandeis University and is Chair of the New York City Alumni Performing Arts Network. She served a two-year term as co-President of the League of Professional Theatre Women (2009-2011), and has been co-Secretary, co-producer of the New Play Festival, and chair of the Networking Committee.

No Women Directors at Cannes Again - Petition

No Women-Directed Films at Cannes - Please Sign the Petition Below Twenty-two films will be showcased at the Cannes Film Festival this year, but not one of them is directed by a woman. A group of French feminist activists known as La Barbe issued a manifesto protesting the lack of women directors at Cannes, and now our colleague Melissa Silverstein, founder of Women and Hollywood, has put together a petition in English directed to the jurors of the Cannes Film Festival expressing our outrage at the lack of women directors in the competition and the male-dominated selection process.  The petition calls for transparency in the film selection process and for an industry-wide discussion about the continuing problem of lack of opportunities for women directors working at the highest level of the business. The petition was launched on Wednesday afternoon with over 170 people signing initially including many prominent women in film.  Over 1,100 people have signed so far including women artists and arts organizations from all over the world.  Please sign the petition and encourage your friends to do so too. Martha Richards Executive Director, WomenArts _______________________________________ Petition To the Jurors of the Cannes Film Festival: You will spend the next 11 days watching 22 films that the programmers and leaders of the Cannes Film Festival deemed to be the worthiest of this year's competition. The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious festivals in the world.  Festival Films including last year's Oscar winner The Artist have gone on to have long and successful lives, and filmmakers' careers have been launched on the Croisette.  As we all know, the opportunities to have your film seen on a world stage is invaluable. For the 2012 edition, as with the 2010 edition, there are NO FEMALE DIRECTED FILMS in competition, and in the 64 years of the Festival only one woman -- Jane Campion -- has been awarded the Palme D'Or. Festival director Thierry Fremaux responded to the recent manifesto from La Barbe - a French feminist action group - which decried the lack of women by saying:  "I select work on the basis of it actual qualities. We would never agree to select a film that doesn’t deserve it on the basis it was made by a woman…There is no doubt that greater space needs to be given to women within cinema. But it’s not at Cannes and in the month of May that this question needs to be raised, but rather all year and everywhere." We call for Cannes, and other film festivals worldwide to commit to transparency and equality in the selection process of these films. We judge films as human beings, shaped by our own perspectives and experiences. It is vital, therefore, that there be equality and diversity at the point of selection. Mr. Fremaux is correct in stating that women's rights must be addressed year round.  We, the undersigned, encourage an industry-wide discussion about this issue, and call on the leaders throughout the industry to participate in and contribute to a dialogue about how we can, to quote Mr. Fremaux, "create a greater space for women within cinema." KINGS PARK: Stories from an American Mental Institution Screening

NYWIFT/HSBC Screening Series Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution  Event: Tuesday May 22, 2012 Join us for a free advanced screening of the documentary Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution, directed and produced by Lucy Winer. Kings Park On June 21, 1967, at the age of seventeen, Lucy Winer was committed to the female violent ward of Kings Park State Hospital following a series of failed suicide attempts. Over 30 years later, now an award-winning, veteran documentary filmmaker, Lucy returns to Kings Park for the first time since her discharge. Her journey back sparks a decade-long odyssey to confront her past and learn the story of the now-abandoned institution that once held her captive. Her meetings with other former patients, their families, and the hospital staff reveal the painful legacy of our state hospital system and the crisis left by its demise. Following its recent sold-out premiere at the Woodstock International film Festival, Stewart Nusbaumer at Filmmaker Magazine had this to say about Kings Park: “When the credits ended and the house lights came on the audience sat in stunned silence. Winer’s work has been distributed theatrically in the U.S. and overseas, and broadcast nationally on PBS and cable. Her work has been called “intriguing, often hair-raising” by The New York Times; “warm, witty and genuinely touching” by The Los Angeles Times; “immensely affecting” by The Village Voice; “hilarious” by The Hollywood Reporter; and “produced with humor, insight and irony” by Variety. Her films have been featured at numerous festivals, including Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, and London, and screened at the American Film Institute theaters in L.A. and D.C., the Walker Art Institute, the Museum of Modern Art and the New Museum.
