FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS

September 2023

Welcome to the Fall Season of 2023!

We are so excited for a number of changes which are being put into place as we speak (or as you read). 2023-24 is going to be an incredible year for the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, and for all of you who are members.

*** Speaking of members, many people have reached out to us over the years about how they could be a member of the Coalition if they weren’t a member of one of our member organizations. The answer used to be that you couldn’t. Well, that is about to change. Yes, you’re still a member if you’re in of any of our member orgs, but now there will also be Individual Memberships for those who are not, and for those who want to have an individual listing in our new Listing of Member Artists, have access to our new WAMCollaboration Google Group, and more.

(See more info below.)

*** We now have a physical office! The Women in the Arts & Media Coalition is now part of the Houghton Hall Arts Community, located at 22 East 30th Street, NY, NY, 10016, in Room 313. We are hoping to start in person Meet & Greets in the Houghton Hall studios soon, as well as small meetings and work sessions for board members, volunteers, and collaborators.

*** We also have two new associate member organizations. Well, one is actually a returning member, now flourishing and active again: The Rehearsal Club. See their upcoming major event below. The brand spanking new affiliate member is NLAPW (National League of American Pen Women - Manhattan/NYC Chapter. Links to both their websites can be found on the Affiliate Members page of our website. Check them out!

*** 2024 will be our first Collaboration Award since the pandemic! All this fall we’ll be letting you know of ways to connect with potential collaborators if you’re looking for someone to work with you on a project, and the submission info will be going out soon - see more info below.

*** With our terrific grants from NYSCA and WomenArts, we have spent the summer updating our Resource Pages. Now that they’re current, we are going to be seeking out more resources to add. Please send us information for any resource you would like to share with other members. If you know where it should be on our site, great—otherwise, we will figure out the best place for it.

*** We have a new Resource Page added to the website as well, and one more coming soon. We'll be continually adding more to these pages, so please share anything you recommend.

If You Are A Student, You Will Soon Be Able to Become an Individual Student Member of the Coalition!

With our new Individual Student Memberships, you can join the Women in the Arts and Media Coalition for ONLY $10 PER YEAR. To be eligible for a student membership, one must be actively studying their discipline, and not yet a practicing professional. You do not need to be matriculated in a graduate, undergraduate, or professional full-time program.

Student members will have their own directory and their own Google Group. There is also a separate Student Collaboration Award to which student members can submit.

COLLABORATION AWARDS

The $1,000 Collaboration Award and additional honorable mentions are designed to encourage professional women in the arts and media from different specializations to work collaboratively on the creation of a new artistic work. The aim of the award is to encourage women to work collaboratively with women of other disciplines. Eligible teams may submit any form of creative collaboration on a new work that had its first public performance within the last two years. A public performance can include, but is not limited to a staged reading, gallery show, screenings, concert series, etc. Due to the NEW Individual Memberships, you will no longer need to be a member of a member organization to be eligible for submission. Soon you will be able to apply by joining the Coalition as an Individual Member.

The WAMCollaboration Google Group & Newsletter! The Women in the Arts and Media Coalition is creating a WAMCollaboration Google Group that will allow artists to network and seek out collaborators for their projects. Members can also sign up for the Collaboration Newsletter to receive postings of exclusive artistic opportunities from other members.

We're looking for some great people to serve on the Collaboration Awards Committee, helping to put out the call for submissions, curate submissions, and choose the winners. If you're interested, email us at volunteers@womenartsmediacoalition.org and put Collaboration Awards Committee in the subject line.

With a cast of women whose ages span six decades, #∞ weaves personal stories reflecting women’s oppression through video, spoken word, monologue, and scenes - integrated with a rhythm which evolves from the flow of music and movement into words. Developed from interviews of women sharing their experience, all inherently anchored to the essence of being a woman, it is set in a playground during a game of Tag with a home base, representing safe and unsafe spaces on the stage. Whereas #MeToo became prolific, we amplify, in performing landscape, that women’s exploitation is beyond prolific, it is infinite.
