Commission for NEW PLAY featuring Master of Fine Arts students at Big 10 University

The Michigan State University Department of Theatre seeks to commission a playwright to write a new full-length play, scheduled for a fully-realized production in Spring 2024. The play will feature the work of current Master of Fine Arts Acting and Design students. We are seeking a new play with at least eight great roles that highlight the diversity of our MFA Actors. Meet them here: https://theatre.msu.edu/commission/ We imagine a collaborative process where the playwright and MFAs discuss themes, issues, and stories that collectively interest them. We seek an early-career or graduate student playwright (preferred, but not essential) interested in writing a play specifically for this group to culminate in public performances. As part of our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, we encourage applications from playwrights from the Global Majority*. The chosen playwright will receive a $4000 fee to create a new play and participate in all the above-listed events over a year and a half. Funding will also be allocated for travel and housing for on-site developmental workshops and rehearsals.

Nylon Fusion Theatre Company

Nylon Fusion Theatre Company is currently accepting submissions of new works for future projects. RETROSPECT: The Worst of Times We have some epic fails in our past. Explore one of them. Was this a failure to all or just some? Could it have been prevented?   Should it have been prevented?  Take any angle you want, even speculating what it would mean if things were different. PROSPECT: The Future Every era has a “future” style. A future outlook based on the present. What does “future” look like now? What does it sound like? What does it feel like? We look at The Jetsons or Back To The Future and say “where is my flying car?” What do we expect now that we know that flying cars aren’t (yet?) a thing? Speculate. Have fun!

Keegan’s Boiler Room Series 


The Keegan Theatre believes that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are essential in the open and honest exploration of the human condition. Through a commitment to these tenets in casting, staffing, and the selection of works, Keegan aims to enrich our world through art and action. Keegan Theatre, a professional, non-equity theatre in Washington, DC, is accepting submissions for development in its 22-23 Boiler Room Series AND possible inclusion as a full, world premiere production in a future mainstage season. Up to six pieces will be selected for a workshop process that will culminate in public staged readings, interviews, and audience talkbacks. At least one playwright from the 22-23 cohort will be commissioned to develop a world premiere for Keegan's 23-24 sea

Chameleon Theatre


Chameleon Theatre Company is a Philadelphia-based company producing theatre from a woman’s perspective, especially plays dealing with issues such as gender, sexuality, feminism, ageism and violence. 3GT Innovators Series 

3Girls Theatre seeks submissions for the Innovators Series on a year-round rolling basis. We are looking for women playwrights and/or women-led theater companies with experimental projects in early stages of development. The 3GT Innovators Series supports theater makers as they develop their work, providing development and production resources. 3GT also offers platforms for sharing their work with different communities, including Innovators Happy Hours at Google Community Space, which combine in-development “scratch” performances with a party atmosphere and networking opportunities for trailblazing peers from across San Francisco.

Stay True Theatre Company

Stay True Theatre Company is a small theatre company based in New York City, founded in Summer 2019 in honor of World Pride by Andrew Victor Myers and Morgan Bartholick, following a one-off production benefitting Gay Men's Health Crisis. In 2020, Anne Karyna Bakan joined the administrative staff as the company's new Associate Artistic Director. Together, Andrew and Anne strive to produce and support work that embodies the vast medley of identities and groups that comprise the entire LGBTQIA+ community. NY Winterfest 

Now calling all playwrights: Here’s a chance to have your play live on a New York City Stage! Submit your work to the Winterfest festival competition. Accepting plays and musicals of all genres between 5-90 minutes in length. New York Theater Festival has been a haven for playwrights for 17 seasons. Total cash prizes up to $7,000.

Music Theatre of CT (MTC)

Golden Thread Productions, founded in 1996, is the first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East. We produce passionate and provocative plays from or about the Middle East that celebrate the multiplicity of its perspectives and identities. We are a developmental catalyst and vibrant artistic home to artists at various stages of their career. We bring the Middle East to the American stage, creating treasured cultural experiences for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

o Eligibility:​ There is a $15 entry fee for the competition, which must be paid along with the submitted script. Any script submitted without the entry fee will not be considered. A second entry fee must be submitted for a second script. (see #10 below)

  • Submissions that have been previously produced or published will not be accepted. A play that is scheduled for a professional production at the time of submission will also not be accepted.

  • The submission must be written in the English Language.

  • The submission cannot be a musical, translation, or children’s play.

  • The submission must be a minimum of 60 pages and a maximum of 90 pages.

  • The manuscript must be easy to read with the pages numbered.

  • The submission must begin with a title page that includes the work’s name and the playwright’s name, address, telephone number, and email. There should also include a character list and scene breakdown if applicable.

  • The cast for the play must be limited to no more than 6 actors.

  • The script may have more than one author. Also, the playwright(s) may include a brief biography, but it is not necessary.

  • Playwrights are paid a stipend if their play is chosen.

  • If a playwright’s play is chosen then they are required to attend the reading and partake in a talkback. Travel will not be covered.

  • Each playwright is limited to two different submissions per year. There will be no revision accepted once a script has been submitted. Revised plays that have been previously submitted to the competition may be submitted again.

  • There will be no written or oral critique given on scripts submitted. We will notify the playwrights whose plays have been selected for readings. The five plays selected for readings will be announced on our website.

IATI THEATER’S CIMIENTOS 2023

IATI Theater’s Play Development Program, Cimientos, provides playwrights the opportunity to develop new, never-before produced plays through a community of cutting-edge theater artists. Through the PPP* and SRP*, Cimientos amplifies as clearly as possible the voice of the creational author who lays the foundations from which a dramatic work is conceived. Like IATI Theater, Cimientos is committed to supporting playwrights and works that push conventions and explore the avant-garde. We recognize, however, that what is different and innovative is not always what is unconventional and, therefore, we do not discriminate against naturalistic works.

o Eligibility:​ The online form is the only method of submission. No submissions will be accepted via email. Once submitted, no changes can be done. Please ensure to submit the correct file. The button below will be active during June.

2. This program is open to authors from anywhere in the world with original works in English or Spanish who are interested in feedback from a New York audience.

3. The playwright must commit to take part in the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel) meetings, either in person or video conference. The PPP will meet for ten (10) consecutive weeks during Decembe 2022 - February 2023.

4. The playwright must commit to participate in their post-reading talk-back, either in person or video conference.

5. Applicant must be the original creator of the submitted work and the sole owner of its rights. By submitting their work, applicants grant IATI Theater permission to use the submitted material for the Cimientos Program.

6. The submission must be a completed, new, full-length play that has not had a previous professional production. If the play has undergone a workshop, staged reading or development of any kind, the playwright must state so on the online form. We encourage plays in an early stage of development.

7. Submissions must be non-published work. Published plays in any format are not acceptable.

8. Only one play may be submitted per playwright, per season.

9. Scripts must be between 45–90 minutes in length.

10. The play must have five (5) actors or less. Plays that have more than 5 characters and do not provide a clear and stageable double-role explanation will not be reviewed. It must be clearly expressed on the online form.

11. The author’s name(s) should not appear anywhere within the script or file, any authorship information must not be visible in the play document or file. Cimientos reads submissions ‘blind’, in an effort to let the quality of the work speak for itself and to keep our judging process as equitable as possible.

12. All documents must be submitted in PDF format. Other formats will not be accepted.

Manhattan Repertory Theatre Play Production Program 

Self-Produce a production of your best play in New York City as live theatre comes back to life in this New Renaissance of Theatre. We will do all the work, from hiring a production team and staff, to casting, directing, building costumes, set design, lighting design, payroll and more. From 3 performances to 20 performances for one simple Production Fee. Pre-Pandemic, 2017 - 2019, we produced 60 plays in Midtown Manhattan for playwrights all over the world. Production time frames available: Late Autumn 2021, Winter/Spring 2022.Currently, as we move back into production in New York City, we are only accepting Full-Length plays and Musicals - 60 to 150 minutes. Production fees range from $12,000 to $50,000 depending on the "size" of your production, scenic elements, and the number of performances.

Overtime Theater WokeFest


The Overtime Theater in San Antonio, Texas is seeking new works from playwrights for WokeFEST, a showcase of progressive, activist, and political plays. The chosen play will be given a staged reading or a staged production August 5-27, 2022 at the Overtime Theater.

o Eligibility:​ In light of Covid-19 protocols, the Overtime Theater is seeking plays that require one to five actors. Previously unproduced full-length and one-act plays are welcome, as well as longform monologues. The chosen play (or plays) will be given two rehearsals and one staged reading, which includes an audience feedback session. For environmental reasons, the Overtime Theater is unable to accept script submissions delivered by mail or in person. Only submissions in a Word document or PDF will be considered. The Autry: Native Voices Script Submissions 

Native Voices is accepting submissions of full-length plays (60+ pages) by American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and First Nations playwrights addressing all themes and topics. 2023 Playwrights Retreat and 29th Festival of New Plays The Retreat and Festival bring artists to Los Angeles to work on a selected number of plays through a rigorous directorial and dramaturgical commitment for 8–10 days in June. The Retreat culminates in public staged readings of the plays at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. Selected playwrights receive artistic support as well as an honorarium; out-of-town artists receive roundtrip airfare plus lodging in Southern California.

Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest 2021

To encourage the development of quality theatrical materials for the educational, community and children’s theatre markets, Pioneer Drama Service is proud to sponsor the annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest.

This is an ongoing contest, with a winner selected by June 1 each year from all eligible submissions received the previous year.  All eligible plays accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists, from which the winner will be selected.  The contest winner will receive a $1,000 royalty advance in addition to publication.

  • We will only consider manuscripts with a running time between 20 and 90 minutes.

  • Submissions must be family friendly in both subject and language. NO cursing. NO explicitly adult content.

  • We prefer casts that are either balanced or favoring females. The more gender neutral roles, the better.

  • We favor plays and musicals with ensemble casts, where more than just a few have a chance to shine.

  • Plays with elaborate set, costume or technical requirements are not appealing because of the limited resources of many of our customers. Pictures, sketches or descriptions of your vision are always helpful.

  • We recommend your submissions have had at least one production or reading, hopefully staged. We feel this fundamental field test is necessary before a play can be considered for publication since plays are created for the purpose of performance.

  • Manuscripts must be computer-printed in dark ink. We do not require specific formatting. However, your efforts to ensure your script is free of misspellings and typos will help the submissions editor.

  • We hope that Pioneer Drama is your first choice as a publisher, and we encourage you to submit to us exclusively. However, we do accept simultaneous submissions with the understanding that you will accept the first contract you’re offered and not use the situation to seek multiple offers from which to choose. If you receive another offer, please notify us immediately so we may rescind your submission.

  • The following information must accompany your submission or query:

  • 100-200 word synopsis.

  • Cast list that indicates the number of female roles, the number of male roles and the number of roles that can be performed by either gender. We do not accept one-person shows.

  • Running time.

  • CD and/or score for musicals. We appreciate the opportunity to hear the music, if possible.

  • Set design(s). Please feel free to provide diagrams and/or pictures.

  • Proof of production or staged reading (i.e., review, program, etc.) A DVD of your performance is ideal, though not required.

Middle/High School Plays by BIPOC Playwrights

Theatrefolk Inc. is seeking one-act Middle School & High School play submissions by BIPOC playwrights for immediate publication. Our mission is to represent student voices and to let students know they are not alone. It has been made clear where we have succeeded and where we have failed in this pursuit. We want to do better. It’s crucial that students know there are playwrights out there speaking directly to them and for them.

Fire Escape Plays

The New Jersey Repertory Company is soliciting 30-45 minute plays or musicals that are newly written and previously unproduced, and that can be staged on a multilevel fire escape. Playwrights should keep in mind that cast size is limited to 1-3 actors and performers will be on separate levels with separate entrances and there will be no physical contact. Audiences will sit in their cars as in a drive-in movie or in safely distanced and designated spaces with portable seats.

Panglossian Productions

What are you working on?  What are you excited about?  What would you like to discuss and develop with a creative team?  Bring it on. Panglossian is seeking new full-length plays for our new global/local developmental reading series, Plays in Progress. We work with writers across the globe to develop work locally here in Williamsburg. Selected playwrights will discuss their goals for the script with our staff, attend one or two discussions/rehearsals, and participate in a public reading, which will be streamed online. Writers who are not local may participate virtually over Skype.

Urban Stages Emerging Playwright Award 

Our $500 Emerging Playwright Award (coupled with press coverage) is given to playwrights who show excellence and dedication throughout this process – from development to the stage. Out of hundreds of submissions a year, we select 15-20 plays for readings. From these, we select 1-3 plays annually to go on to our workshopping phase. Our workshops are meant to prepare a play for our Off-Broadway stage. From our workshops, we select 1-2 plays for full productions, complete with a playwright’s contract and compensation (separate from the award).

Transition Manager, Ensemble Studio Theater 

EST is seeking a dynamic interim Transition Manager for a 6-month period (with a possible 3-month extension). The Transition Manager will help guide the organization as it transforms its leadership systems from the current structure (Artistic Director and Executive Director) into a new one, with two Co-Artistic Directors, a Managing Director, and administrative and artistic staff realignment while maintaining operational continuity throughout. Serving largely as an interim Managing Director, the Transition Manager will collaborate with staff to execute the ensemble’s vision, mission, and goals in new play development and production while exemplifying its core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Transition Manager will work closely with the current artistic, finance, communications, development, and production staff. The Transition manager will also work with the new leadership (Co-Artistic Directors and Managing Director) and management (General Manager, Development Manager) positions as they are on-boarded. This position will maintain current administrative and financial systems to ensure continuity throughout this period. The Transition Manager reports to the Board of Directors, working collaboratively with Board officers, and will be responsible for keeping the Board informed and abreast of management progress and outcomes on a regular basis, and will be a vital thought partner under a shared leadership model. They will meet regularly with the Leadership team of the theatre, ensuring shared vision and collaboration across departments.

The Nancy Dean Award for Lesbian Playwrights 2022


The Nancy Dean award for Lesbian Playwrights is to honor a woman who was at the forefront of Lesbian, queer, gay, genderqueer, gender-nonconforming, trans, intersex and people of color movements. We honor her focus and writing on Lesbian relationships before the time of the Stonewall rebellion. Her writings were the precursor to social change. In that spirit of struggle and often hidden desire we encourage the submission of new plays that address the conflict of lesbian, queer or gay, trans and nonbinary women struggling to live and love their best lives. In these times of social definition and refinement the age-old conflict of acceptance and the right to live our true lives as we truly are is still our continuing fight which is refined and embolden by each new generation. We understand people have their own language for their gender and sexuality. We are open to submission from people who are lesbian, queer or gay, trans and nonbinary. As we are a small family foundation with an all-volunteer board, we must rely on nominations to identify potential recipients. We are asking professors, teachers, artistic directors, directors, literary managers, actors, writers, and others to nominate promising writers. As we want to be inclusive, we will allow people to self-nominate.

Artist Rescue Trust 

The next evolution of the Artist Rescue Trust program is a partnership with Grant for the Web. They have awarded us a grant allowing us to directly fund more artists and help them educate anyone about Web Monetization as an emerging and potential revenue stream. One that doesn't rely on advertising, pay walls, and bad data privacy practices. It's an innovative way forward to help build a healthier internet.

Web Monetization is a new and open technology that aims to provide a better way to access and financially reward  creators through streaming micropayments - aka tiny fractions of a penny - to instantly flow to artists and creators as people read, watch and listen to their work.

While we want to support artists now with immediate financial assistance, we also want to help support the future financial opportunities for all artists. So this is why we’ve built a learning component into our grant application process. We will also be releasing a series of Web Monetization tutorials that will dive deeper into how you can make it part of your online world.
