PROJECT SUBMISSIONS 


19th Annual Fresh Fruit Festival

All Out Arts is accepting submissions for the 19th Annual Mainstage portion of the Fresh Fruit Festival, New York City’s grassroots, multidisciplinary, international festival of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer arts and culture.  The festival will occur over two weeks in early May at The Wild Project in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Entries are accepted through January 24, 2022. Thanks to the generosity of New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and others, there are no submission fees for early applicants (by Jan. 1), and no performance fees are required. The Fresh Fruit Festival’s goal is to present the whole spectrum of LGBTQ lives as expressed through new Theatre, Performance Art, Dance, Video, Film, Graphic Arts, Music & various other forms of artistic expression. Submissions in all artistic disciplines & lengths are considered for presentation as long as they highlight or showcase a spectrum of the LGBTQ experience, and are finished, self-produced shows. The Festival provides AEA-approved performance venues & insurance, marketing & publicity assistance, ticketing services, professional theater staff (logistics manager; a light or sound technician; front of house), repertory lighting plot & sound system, networking events, box-office shares, & more!

The Woodward/Newman Drama Award 

The Woodward/Newman Award is an exclusive honor offered by Bloomington Playwrights Project, started through the support of Joanne Woodward, Newman’s Own Foundation, and the Newman family, celebrating Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward’s tremendous history of work on stage and screen. It presents the best unpublished play of the year with a cash prize of $3,000 and a full production as part of BPP’s Mainstage season, along with travel reimbursement. Submissions for the 2022-23 competition must be submitted by Dec 1, 2021.

o Eligibility:We are currently accepting submissions for the 2022-23 Woodward/Newman Award. The winner and finalists will be announced by June 2022. The winner will be awarded $3,000 and a full production.

  • “Full-length” plays should have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).

  • Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission (independently published is acceptable).

Athena Project Plays In Progress (PIP) Series

 

Athena Project’s Plays In Progress (PIP) Series exists to develop new theatrical works by women* playwrights. Selected playwrights work in consultation with a dramaturg, director, and cast to see their works performed at various levels, from table reads to staged performances, and receive audience feedback from post-presentation discussions. The Series also includes networking events for participating playwrights. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 and 2021 series have adapted to online formats. We plan to resume live, in-person performances in 2022.

Submissions are accepted March 1-April 15, 2021. Three to five new plays will be selected through an anonymous adjudication process and winners will be announced by October. The selected plays will receive a dramaturg, director, and cast for presentation as part of the 2022 PIP Series, held the first week of June in Denver, CO. Presentations will take the form of table reads, concert readings, and workshop performances. We encourage playwrights to attend the full Series and offer stipends to assist with expenses.*At Athena Project, we believe that “women” means many things and can be a complicated term. We recognize that “women” does not automatically include all aspects of the gender spectrum. We want to create a safer space for the expression and growth for all women, trans and gender nonconforming individuals.

3GT Innovators Series 

3Girls Theatre seeks submissions for the Innovators Series on a year-round rolling basis. We are looking for women playwrights and/or women-led theater companies with experimental projects in early stages of development. The 3GT Innovators Series supports theater makers as they develop their work, providing development and production resources. 3GT also offers platforms for sharing their work with different communities, including Innovators Happy Hours at Google Community Space, which combine in-development “scratch” performances with a party atmosphere and networking opportunities for trailblazing peers from across San Francisco.

Stay True Theatre Company

Stay True Theatre Company is a small theatre company based in New York City, founded in Summer 2019 in honor of World Pride by Andrew Victor Myers and Morgan Bartholick, following a one-off production benefitting Gay Men's Health Crisis. In 2020, Anne Karyna Bakan joined the administrative staff as the company's new Associate Artistic Director. Together, Andrew and Anne strive to produce and support work that embodies the vast medley of identities and groups that comprise the entire LGBTQIA+ community. NY Winterfest 2021 

Now calling all playwrights: Here’s a chance to have your play live on a New York City Stage! Submit your work to the Winterfest 2021 festival competition. Accepting plays and musicals of all genres between 5-90 minutes in length. New York Theater Festival has been a haven for playwrights for 17 seasons. Total cash prizes up to $7,000.

Native Voices: 12th Annual Short Play Festival 

Short Plays  TRICKSTER : Coyotes, Rabbits, and Ravens, Oh My!  Many Native stories involve a Trickster, a cunning, crafty, clever, mischief-making being who often teaches humankind how to be while embodying what not to be. A Trickster is the ultimate disrupter. They can be charming, witty, funny, harsh, critical, but they have a truth to share with us if we only listen. And if we don’t listen? Well, they will find a way whether we like it or not. We promise: this isn't a trick! For our 2022 Short Play Festival, we invite you to tell a story inspired by a Trickster. These plays can be funny, sad, triumphant, or anything in between. The only rule: they must be 10 minutes long. They also must incorporate the theme "Trickster" (see? I tricked you! I said there was one rule but there's actually two!) Plays chosen to participate in the 12th Annual Short Play Festival will also be entered to win the Von Marie Atchley Excellence in Playwriting award – a $1,000 cash prize!!  Scripts longer than 15 pages or read aloud at longer than 10 minutes will not be accepted. Fresh, surprising perspectives are welcome, and unique theatricality is a must.

Femuscripts Love Fest 10-minute plays from female-identifying or non-binary playwrights

Femuscripts presents the second annual production of the popular Love Fest, which will take place in February, 2022. We are seeking plays all on the theme of love. We’re talking about love of all kinds: friendship, pets, family, planet, romantic partners, kids, requited, unrequited… any and all love under the sun.

Live & In Color is looking for playwrights, composers, and lyricists of color and/or other underrepresented communities interested in developing their new musical.The selected musical submission will have a two-week workshop in the fall at The Bingham Camp in Salem, Connecticut culminating in a staged presentation to an invited audience.

United Beyond Borders Hear Thalia’s Daughters Laughing seeks short comedic plays from female-identified playwrights for publication

This international volume is hoped to be multi-lingual, thus giving each playwright a chance to submit a short piece in their mother tongue and its translated into English version. Submissions from the United States/UK/Australia/Nigeria/etc. shall remain in original unless the author knows and speaks fluently another language or can work with a translator. The volume will have 10-12 comedies.

o Eligibility: The play must be a comedy (because the doctor is in the house and she has prescribed laughter),

  • The script must be written by a female identified playwright (because the volume is coordinated/commissioned via an organization dedicated to womxn playwrights exclusively),

  • The script must be short, i.e., no longer than 20-30 pages (because I, like you, crave for comedic essence),

  • The script must be composed during “the longest year of our lives,” or how I call 2020-21 (because the intention is to see how womxn have used laughter as a coping mechanism during the pandemic),

  • hence, it can be realistic, symbolic, absurd: you choose, you are free! It could have had a reading, two readings, or 1,000 readings on Zoom. 

  • Our main goal is to see how we understand and produce comedy worldwide and how we tap into our creative resources to deal with the trauma of a pandemic via mild to strong laughs. 

  • Submit your piece by New Year’s Eve of 2021 to fflorescu@pace.edu with the subject line “Thalia’s Daughters.” The process of reading, evaluating, and making a decision will commence with a good wine, a great laughter, and a chance to see womxn in their full, vibrant potential. 365 Women A Year: A Playwriting Project

Welcome 2021 playwrights! We are entering our eighth year of writing pieces about 365 historical women a year! We would love to have you write with us! All of the information on how to participate is below. Because there was so much out of our control in 2020, you are able to write about any women you want, even if we’ve already covered them. (Usually, we don’t take duplicates)

o Eligibility:​ FIRST STEP: Choose a woman or women to write about. We definitely need more pieces about women from 1700s and prior and pieces on women who lived in Africa, Asia, and Australia. 

  • Once you have chosen some options, you will fill out the claim form

  • 2021 CLAIM FORM

  • SECOND STEP: You will receive a confirmation email. You are not officially writing about anyone until you have received this confirmation email from 365womenayear@gmail.com. It can take a few weeks to get a confirmation email depending on the volume of claims we receive. 

  • THIRD STEP: Happy writing. If at any point throughout the year, you get a hankering to write about someone else, simply fill out a new claim form.

  • Plays can be any length, any number of characters, any language, any genre (musicals included), and the playwriting format you are most comfortable with. PLEASE INCLUDE A LIST OF CHARACTERS at the beginning of the play. It is okay if more historical women end up in your piece than you claimed. When choosing someone very different than you, do your research and be thoughtful about what you are asking future actors to perform. 

  • FOURTH STEP: Submitting your piece. Please follow the directions, as your piece will not be officially submitted otherwise. 

  • You will email your piece to 365womenayear@gmail.com. Follow the directions below:

  • In the subject line you will put: 2021/Name of historical woman/Play Title/Page Number/Your Name. (If you have many historical women in your piece, simply write “MANY WOMEN” in place of the name of the historical women in the subject line.)

  • Include YOUR 100 word playwriting bio in the BODY of the email. (If you have already written with us and do NOT need your bio updated then do not include your bio.) 

  • Write out your historical/play info to be searchable on the website in the following format: 

  • Each historical woman needs to be listed separately, include ANY existing woman who appears in your piece, even if you didn’t specifically claim them.

  • New: We want the women to be searchable by country of birth and their background so it is easier when people are putting together festivals. Example below:

  • Country of birth: France Race/Ethnicity/Heritage: White, Belgian-French

  • Attach your play as a PDF and submit!

  • You can always email us if you have any questions. Please understand, that your bio won’t be listed on the web site until your play is turned in and processed. 

  • You can write about as many women as you want and they can all be in the same piece, or separate pieces. It is okay if the piece is simply about the historical woman or women, but they don’t appear.

  • Any length welcome from 2 pages-full length. Any number of characters. Any language. Any genre. Musicals included.

  • You are always allowed to revise your piece. When you do, email it again with REVISION/Play title/Playwright/Year in the subject line and the revised piece attached as a PDF.

  • Women MUST have existed. *They can be living or dead. *Our plays are loosely based on these historical figures. *History may have forgotten their name but we know they existed and they need to be covered. This happened often to those enslaved where we have no recording of their actual name and women from ancient times. 

  • If you are writing a piece about a woman who is from a different culture/ethnicity/race/religion than you, please do your research and be mindful and respectful. Be thoughtful of what you are asking your future actors to do and say. It is never a good look for a white playwright to have a piece full of racial slurs. It’s just not necessary. Research, collaboration, and respect are key.

  • Yes, we plan to do this every year.

  • You retain ALL rights to your pieces and may submit them anytime and anywhere you want to. When one of your 365 pieces gets produced, we will put it on the web site and tweet about it! Nothing will be done with your play without your discretion. If a theatre wants to produce your piece, we will contact you. While the play info is searchable, interested parties cannot read your piece unless you give permission. When publishing opportunities arise, it is up to you whether or not you would like your piece to be included.

  • We have had festivals all over the world and appeared in The Dramatist. We have playwrights from all over the world participating.

Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest 2021

To encourage the development of quality theatrical materials for the educational, community and children’s theatre markets, Pioneer Drama Service is proud to sponsor the annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest.

This is an ongoing contest, with a winner selected by June 1 each year from all eligible submissions received the previous year.  All eligible plays accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists, from which the winner will be selected.  The contest winner will receive a $1,000 royalty advance in addition to publication.

  • We will only consider manuscripts with a running time between 20 and 90 minutes.

  • Submissions must be family friendly in both subject and language. NO cursing. NO explicitly adult content.

  • We prefer casts that are either balanced or favoring females. The more gender neutral roles, the better.

  • We favor plays and musicals with ensemble casts, where more than just a few have a chance to shine.

  • Plays with elaborate set, costume or technical requirements are not appealing because of the limited resources of many of our customers. Pictures, sketches or descriptions of your vision are always helpful.

  • We recommend your submissions have had at least one production or reading, hopefully staged. We feel this fundamental field test is necessary before a play can be considered for publication since plays are created for the purpose of performance.

  • Manuscripts must be computer-printed in dark ink. We do not require specific formatting. However, your efforts to ensure your script is free of misspellings and typos will help the submissions editor.

  • We hope that Pioneer Drama is your first choice as a publisher, and we encourage you to submit to us exclusively. However, we do accept simultaneous submissions with the understanding that you will accept the first contract you’re offered and not use the situation to seek multiple offers from which to choose. If you receive another offer, please notify us immediately so we may rescind your submission.

  • The following information must accompany your submission or query:

  • 100-200 word synopsis.

  • Cast list that indicates the number of female roles, the number of male roles and the number of roles that can be performed by either gender. We do not accept one-person shows.

  • Running time.

  • CD and/or score for musicals. We appreciate the opportunity to hear the music, if possible.

  • Set design(s). Please feel free to provide diagrams and/or pictures.

  • Proof of production or staged reading (i.e., review, program, etc.) A DVD of your performance is ideal, though not required.

Middle/High School Plays by BIPOC Playwrights

Theatrefolk Inc. is seeking one-act Middle School & High School play submissions by BIPOC playwrights for immediate publication. Our mission is to represent student voices and to let students know they are not alone. It has been made clear where we have succeeded and where we have failed in this pursuit. We want to do better. It’s crucial that students know there are playwrights out there speaking directly to them and for them.

Fire Escape Plays

The New Jersey Repertory Company is soliciting 30-45 minute plays or musicals that are newly written and previously unproduced, and that can be staged on a multilevel fire escape. Playwrights should keep in mind that cast size is limited to 1-3 actors and performers will be on separate levels with separate entrances and there will be no physical contact. Audiences will sit in their cars as in a drive-in movie or in safely distanced and designated spaces with portable seats.

Panglossian is seeking new full-length plays for our new global/local developmental reading series, Plays in Progress. We work with writers across the globe to develop work locally here in Williamsburg. Selected playwrights will discuss their goals for the script with our staff, attend one or two discussions/rehearsals, and participate in a public reading, which will be streamed online. Writers who are not local may participate virtually over Skype.

The inaugural She ATL Summer Theater Festival is produced by SheNYC Arts, and will accept 3-4 full-length plays and musicals by women-identifying writers who reside in Georgia.

Urban Stages Emerging Playwright Award 

Our $500 Emerging Playwright Award (coupled with press coverage) is given to playwrights who show excellence and dedication throughout this process – from development to the stage. Out of hundreds of submissions a year, we select 15-20 plays for readings. From these, we select 1-3 plays annually to go on to our workshopping phase. Our workshops are meant to prepare a play for our Off-Broadway stage. From our workshops, we select 1-2 plays for full productions, complete with a playwright’s contract and compensation (separate from the award).

Core Writer Program 2022-25

o The Core Writer Program is a three-year appointment designed to support a diverse group of playwrights who demonstrate a sustained body of work, commitment, and attributes of artistic merit. The program is available to committed professional playwrights nationally and offers significant resources intended to further a playwright's career. Playwrights who have benefited from the Core Writer Program include: Christina Anderson, Trista Baldwin, Lee Blessing, George Brant, Carlyle Brown, Kristoffer Diaz, Larissa FastHorse, Marcus Gardley, Marvin Gonzalez deLeon, Idris Goodwin, Jeffrey Hatcher, Sherry Kramer, Carson Kreitzer, Martyna Majok, Melanie Marnich, Qui Nguyen, Kira Obolensky, Jen Silverman, Susan Soon He Stanton, Alice Tuan, and Rhiana Yazzie. The Core Writer program annually gives 25-35 of the most exciting playwrights from across the country the time and tools to develop new work for the stage. All Core Writers receive play development workshops with the Center, in collaboration with prominent directors, actors, dramaturgs, and designers. All writers are paid for their workshop time, and Core Writers who are not local are provided travel and housing to Playwrights’ Center for their workshops. Core Writers are eligible to be included in our formal season of public readings: the PlayLabs festival and the Ruth Easton New Play Series. Core Writers are also promoted by the Center and provided opportunities through an extensive network of colleges and universities, cultural institutions, and producing theaters. Each term is three years; Core Writers may reapply for additional terms. Applicants must reside in and have the legal right to work in the U.S. It is not required for an applicant to have had professional productions in order to apply. However, please note that this program is highly competitive and is designed for committed professional playwrights who are pursuing playwriting as their primary career. Students enrolled in a full-time educational program are not eligible. The Core Writer term will be July 1, 2022-June 30, 2025.

Production Manager Manager, Guthrie Theater 

o The Production Manager, in close coordination with the Director of Production, is primarily responsible for the production management of the Guthrie’s mainstage season and Dowling Studio programming. The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship is not a project grant, but is intended to fund an artist’s vision or voice, at all levels of their artistic development.

Artist Rescue Trust 

The next evolution of the Artist Rescue Trust program is a partnership with Grant for the Web. They have awarded us a grant allowing us to directly fund more artists and help them educate anyone about Web Monetization as an emerging and potential revenue stream. One that doesn't rely on advertising, pay walls, and bad data privacy practices. It's an innovative way forward to help build a healthier internet.

Web Monetization is a new and open technology that aims to provide a better way to access and financially reward  creators through streaming micropayments - aka tiny fractions of a penny - to instantly flow to artists and creators as people read, watch and listen to their work.

While we want to support artists now with immediate financial assistance, we also want to help support the future financial opportunities for all artists. So this is why we’ve built a learning component into our grant application process. We will also be releasing a series of Web Monetization tutorials that will dive deeper into how you can make it part of your online world.
