SWAN Day Is This Saturday!

Support Women Artists Now Day/SWAN Day is officially this Saturday, March 26. If you want to be included in our list of 2016 SWAN events that we will publish on Saturday, be sure to post your event on the SWAN Calendar by Thursday, March 24.  There are a number of SWAN events in April this year, and it is fine if your event happens after this Saturday, just be sure to post it on the calendar before midnight tomorrow.

BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez at 2 New York SWAN Events
Sonia Sanchez, a poet and activist who describes herself as "a woman with razor blades between my teeth," has helped to redefine American culture and politics for over 60 years as a leader in the Black Arts Movement, a feminist, and a peace activist.

BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez is a documentary produced and directed by Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater and Sabrina Schmidt Gordon that offers unprecedented access to Sanchez's life, work, and performances. WomenArts is thrilled that this film is being featured at 2 events in New York this month organized by leading advocates for women in film and filmmakers of color. Saturday, March 26 from 2 - 6 p.m. - There will be a SWAN Day screening at the School of Visual Arts Theatre hosted by African-American Women in Cinema, New York Women in Film & Television, Women in Arts & Media Coalition, Women Make Movies, HerFlixSAG-AFTRA, and the School of Visual Arts Film Department. This screening is the closing event of the 18th African-American Women in Cinema (AAWIC) Festival. Thursday, March 31 at 6 p.m. - Third World Newsreel will present the film at Aaron Davis Hall at City College of City University of New York.  Sonia Sanchez herself will join them for the post-show discussion. Read more>>
Composer Hyo-shin Na
BERKELEY, CA -  The Wooden Fish Ensemble will present 3 concerts of Hyo-shin Na's music for Asian zithers, the Japanese Koto and Korean Kayageum, in Berkeley on March 30 and April 5 and in San Francisco on April 4.

Hyo-shin Na has written music for traditional Korean instruments as well as western instruments. Her innovative compositions often combine eastern and western instruments and ways of playing so that the differing sounds and ideas interact, coexist, and conflict in the music. Read more>>
Poet Shelly Bell
WASHINGTON, DC - Women Artists from DC and beyond will offer FREE staged readings and poetry performances at SWAN Day DC presented by Guillotine Theatre at the National Museum of Women in the Arts on Saturday, March 26 from 12 - 2 p.m. The event will include works by playwrights Lisa Alapick, McKenya Dilworth, Ty Hallmark and Laura Rocklyn, as well as story-teller Ellouise Schoettler and poet Shelly Bell. Estrogenius
NEW YORK, NY - Congratulations to Estrogenius on their 15th annual festival of women's voices! Their 2016 festival has included plays, dance, visual art and youth performances. They are wrapping up this week with performances of Steel Birds, a full-length play by by Niki Hatzidis and Anastasia Rutkowski and a weekend of short plays selected by producers Deborah Long and Michael Bordwell.
