Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival (October 23-26, 2014, New York, NY) – The longest-running showcase for international documentaries in the United States, encompassing a broad spectrum of work, from indigenous community media to experimental nonfiction. A selection from the festival will travel to museums, universities, and theaters around the US and abroad after the festival. Submissions must be in English or have English subtitles or voiceover narration. Production must have been completed within the last 3 years. San Francisco Black Film Festival (June 12-15, 2014, San Francisco, CA) – Aims to celebrate African American Cinema and the African Cultural Diaspora by showcasing a diverse collection of films from emerging and established filmmakers that reinforce positive images and dispel negative stereotypes, while providing local, national and international filmmakers a forum for their work to be viewed and discussed. Society for Visual Anthropology SVA Ethnographic Film Festival (December 4-6, 2014, Chicago, IL) – Ethnographic media is defined broadly as works created as the result of ethnographic fieldwork or those which use, are informed by, or illustrate the principles of anthropological theory or methods. Festival gives independent filmmakers as well as distributors broad access to a market of several thousand anthropologists and educators. Seeking ethnographic videos and films in the following categories: Ultra-Short (under 5 minutes; cell-phone and you-tube style videos permitted and encouraged; up to 3 ultra-shorts may be submitted with one entry fee), Short (30 minutes or under), Feature (30-120 minutes), and Interactive Media and Audio/Photo Essay (interactive media includes websites, interactive CD-ROMs / DVD-ROMs / Blu-Ray disks, hyperlinked documents, active or annotated media, etc.; audio and photo essays includes audio-only essays, still photographs, photo and audio essays, soundscapes, and other media). Funding Opportunities
California Arts Council Artists in Schools Program – Provides funding for residency activities that emphasize long-term, in-depth interaction between professional artists and a group of students, during school or after-school programs. Arts organizations of all disciplines are eligible to apply. Residencies should enable students to understand specific art forms and to develop their creativity; projects must include hands-on participation. Each residency must be locally designed and developed in partnership between an arts organization and school(s). **Asian Women Giving Circle Arts and Activism Grants** – Funds Asian American women-led projects that use the tools of culture, arts and education to raise awareness and catalyze action around critical issues that impact Asian American communities with grants of up to $15,000. Eligible projects will build community and create social justice through programs that combine the arts with activism and highlight and promote women in central leadership and management roles. Projects should identify and address injustice within established social systems, institutions or the broader community, and inspire community members to become active social change agents. Applicants must work within the 5 boroughs of New York City and have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or a fiscal sponsor with such status. See website for complete guidelines and application. Native Arts New England – Grants up to $3,000 each to Native artists residing in the 6 New England states for projects that focus on art making and the involvement of and benefit to New England communities. Vision Maker Media Public Media Content Fund – Supports video projects with significant Native involvement – particularly projects that profile Native American leaders, activists, and artists – and helps bring the projects to national broadcast on public television. Projects in any phase of production are eligible. Awards for research and development range from $5,000-$20,000; awards for production or completion can be up to $100,000, and new media awards range from $5,000-$20,000. 360 Xochi Quetzal Artist Residency (May, 2014-January, 2015, Chapala, Mexico) – Located on the shores of the largest lake in Mexico (45 minutes from Guadalajara), residencies of one month open to visual artists, musicians, and writers of all types. Residency provides housing, studio, food stipend, and wi-fi. Artist responsible for transportation to Guadalajara. Apply online (see website for application instructions). FEE: $36. Jack Kerouac Writer in Residence Project (Orlando, FL) – Provides four residencies a year to writers of any stripe or age, living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three-month stay in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of $800 are included. MacDowell Colony (Peterborough, New Hampshire) – Residencies of up to eight weeks (average stay is five weeks) providing artists with time and space to create lasting works of the imagination. Artists in the disciplines of Architecture, Film/Video Arts, Interdisciplinary Arts, Literature, Music Composition, Theatre, and Visual Arts encouraged to apply. Artists collaborating on a project must submit individual application forms and appropriate work samples, but may submit a joint description of the work they intend to do at the Colony. In addition, you may submit an example of a collaborative work (either completed or a work in progress); specify workspace needs (i.e. separate studios). Djerassi Resident Artists Program (4-5 week sessions, mid-March-mid-November, Woodside, CA) – Residencies, including living space, studio space, and all meals, for national and international visual artists, composers, choreographers, performance and media artists, and writers. Artists at all stages of their careers, from emerging to established, are encouraged to apply. Collaborative artists must send individual applications and fees, including a separate page describing the collaborative proposal. Artists in residence will share their work in progress during an annual open house. Applications must include resume, work samples (for filmmakers, video artists, multimedia artists, and performing/theater artists, a DVD, video tape, or CD with samples should be submitted), brief descriptive paragraph about their work, SASE for notification and SASPostcard for receipt of application acknowledgment. Byrdcliffe Arts Colony/Woodstock Guild (May-September, 2014, Woodstock, NY) – Residencies of an average of 4 weeks for writers, visual artists, and composers. Residency provides housing and studio. Artist responsible for food, travel, materials, and residency fee ($600/month). Writers under the age of 35 who need financial assistance may apply for a $100 scholarship from the Patterson Fund (see website for more information). Additional fellowships for artists of all ages available based on financial need. FEE: $50.
