Artists may stay from 3 days to 6 months; average stay is 6-8 weeks. San Francisco Film Society FilmHouse Residencies at Pier 27 (San Francisco, CA) – 6-month residencies designed to bring together under one roof an eclectic mix of San Francisco filmmakers in various stages of production for mutual encouragement and support. Applicants must be SFFS members at the Filmmaker Pro level or above; be at least 18 years old; be actively engaged in a film, video, television or other moving-image project in any genre and in any stage of production—from screenwriting to strategizing the project’s exhibition, distribution and outreach plan. The filmmaker or project must have a significant connection to San Francisco; either the filmmaker is a San Francisco resident, or the project is shooting in San Francisco or involves San Francisco in a meaningful way at one or more stages of production. Projects must be noncommercial and represent an imaginative contribution to the moving image art form. ArtFunkl Aspirus 08 Residency for Writers or Digital Media Artists (January-February, 2014, Manchester, UK) – Aims to provide a quiet, self-contained place for writers or digital media artists to facilitate a period of concentrated production. Artists will be able to be part of the small community of ArtFunkl if desired, but also may remain solitary if they wish. Residency provides housing and studio space, as well as a digital projector if needed. Resident will have the opportunity to launch a piece of work or give a reading at an open studio event and to host events at the venue if they wish. Creative Arts Residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center (August-November, 2014, Bellagio, Italy) – 4-week residencies between August and November, 2012. Open to composers, novelists, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers and visual artists from around the globe, with the goal of bringing together people of diverse expertise and cultures in a thought-provoking creative environment. Spouses/life partners may accompany the resident, or may apply for a concurrent residency. The Center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project. Residents will engage with each other over meals and informal presentations, and interact with the participants of international conferences hosted at the Center. Applicants must demonstrate a history of significant achievement in their discipline. Individuals from developing countries and young artists with significant accomplishments — exhibitions, publications, performances — are particularly encouraged to apply. Residency provides housing and studio/work space. Residents are responsible for travel, food, and materials. NOTE: Application must be completed online in English. The San Francisco Film Society Filmmaker360 – Run by former staff members of Film Arts Foundation, provides step by step help for emerging and established filmmakers through the process of getting your film funded, made, and seen. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, they meet in person with local filmmakers and consult by phone and e-mail with filmmakers out of state. Projects must be non-commercial or educational and represent an imaginative contribution to the film or video art form. Applicant must be seeking donations in the form of grants from public agencies, foundations, corporations, or individual donors. Fill out online application form (available on website); application should be a first draft of a funding proposal that will undergo revisions under the guidance of the program. Film Independent’s Documentary Lab (2014, Los Angeles, CA) – Designed to help filmmakers who are currently in production or post-production on their feature-length documentary films, the Documentary Lab is an intensive seven-week program. The lab will provide creative feedback and story notes to the selected filmmakers and help filmmakers strategize the completion, distribution, and marketing of their film. Fellows will also be introduced to industry professionals who can advise them on the craft and business of documentary filmmaking in one-on-one sessions, and will receive a pass to the Los Angeles Film Festival. Applicant must be the director of a feature-length or hour-long documentary film (directing and producing, or directing and editing teams are welcome to apply together).
