Rare VINTAge: Stars Participate in "Ageism in the Arts & Media"
Conference Oct. 13 in NYC
The New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts & Media will present its first all-day conference, focusing on "Ageism in the Arts & Media," Oct. 13 in Manhattan.Actress-model Lauren Hutton is the keynote speaker for the conference, to be held at John Jay College. A wide range of discussions about ageism — "how to confront it, deal with it and find solutions" — will be led by writers, directors, actors, designers, choreographers and casting directors.
Topics will include "the perception of mature, seasoned professional women in the industry," "positive solutions to ageism," "career changes," "the significance of image," "health concerns" and "attaining financial stability."
Women of all disciplines and ages are invited to the conference, which has the umbrella title, VINTAge 2001. Theatre producer Shari Upbin, producer of the conference, said in a statement, "As we mature and grow as artists and professionals in the arts, women are increasingly defined by age rather than by experience, talent, intelligence, skill and ability."
Participants include Barbara Cook, Carol Channing, Jane Powell, Marian Seldes, Tisa Chang, Donna McKechnie, Gretchen Cryer, Frances Sternhagen, Tovah Feldshuh, Micki Grant, Lynn Ahrens, Richard Dubin, Samm Art Williams, Elaine Legaro, Carol Hall, Myrna Blyth, Eileen Fulton, Graciela Daniele and more.
Admission of for day is $65, which includes lunch. Sue Lawless and William Martin will direct the conference, which was conceived by Elsa Rael, who has headed programs on ageism for Joseph Papp at The Public Theater and at The 92nd St. Y.
