"My name is Terry Diamond. I am a playwright/director and have been attending NYCWAM networking events since 2003. I went to my first NYCWAM BSINE at the Players Club in 2003. I was planning to produce a show in Spring 2004. At that event, Sally Plass the proprietor of Plass Prop House handed out flyers for her prop services. I took her flyer and when I needed a set and props I called on Sally. She dressed my set and it looked great. She offered a very modest rental fee because her business is non-profit. A few months later, I helped Sally get a "services to the field" grant, the first ever grant for Plass Prop House from NYSCA.

The next networking event I attended was in January 2004. I met Lisa Haas, a playwright/performer. Sharing a similar sense of humor we connected professionally. In the next few years, we developed and enoyed a very warm collegial relationship. We support each others work and regularly pass on opportunities that come our way.

I think NYCWAM's networking events are a very effective away to avail myself of the collective resources of professional women in the theatre, arts, and media and to offer my own."

Speed Networking

SPEED NETWORKING: On December 8, 2005 at the first Speed Networking event, forty people from a variety of professional arts and media backgrounds -- writers, actors, directors, producers, agents -- gathered at Actors' Equity and, in a fashion similar to speed dating, shared their hopes and aspirations in 20 one-on-one encounters with other registrants.  "It was fabulous," wrote one participant afterward.  The original notice is here:SPEED NETWORKING - DEC 8 2005.

The New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts & Media has established a Collaboration Award recognizing women working with women.

The $500 award is to encourage professional women in the arts and media to work collaboratively with other women on the creation of new works. Eligible teams are those readying a new work; proposing new work, or continuing with a work-in-progress.

Teams of two (or more) women working together on a creative project may apply for a Collaboration Award. Members of the team must be members of an organization affiliated with the coalition, with each member representing a different discipline. Affiliates of the coalition are: Actors' Equity Association; American Federation of Television and Radio Artists; Dramatists Guild; League of Professional Theatre Women/NY; New York Women in Film & Television; Screen Actors Guild; Society of Stage Directors & Choreographers, and Writers Guild of America, East.

Applicants may suggest any form of creative collaboration and will be judged on the basis of clarity of proposal, likelihood of completion, artistic excellence, passion for the project, and diversity. Special attention will be given to those proposals that reflect the goals of the coalition: to advance women and women's issues. The selected team, plus four runners-up, will be invited to describe or present a portion of their work at an awards ceremony in New York. Those women outside of New York may send a designee to present their project.

The New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts & Media was formed in 1990 to work for the advancement of women and women's issues in the performing arts and media industries. The coalition also includes in its mission encouraging communication to better serve the creative artist; assisting the development of young people in the arts and media; preserving and building cultural heritage; and improving the community's underlying social conditions, such as health care and equal opportunity, which affect the quality of life of members.

The coalition prides itself in providing access to New York's creative community, networking, information sharing, and mentoring.

Emily Mann, now in her 15th season as artistic director of McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J., will be the special guest speaker at a "Blatant Self-Interest Networking Event" sponsored by the New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts & Media on Mon., July 25, at 6 p.m. at the Players, 16 Gramercy Park South (at 20th Street and Park Avenue South).

The New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts & Media was organized in 1990 to work for the advancement of women in the performing arts and media industries. Prepaid admission is $12.
