Jewish Plays Project
We are currently seeking unproduced full-length (65+ minutes) plays and musicals that focus on aspects of 21st Century Jewish identity, culture, and ideas, and the complex and intersectional nature of contemporary Jewish life. While we value history, we will always lean toward plays that tackle vibrant strands of today’s world: social, racial and economic justice; strong women in Jewish life; diverse stories of Jews of Color; LGBTQIA inclusion; new perspectives on Israel, environmentalism, and interfaith relations in addition to deep conversations about our complex and multifaceted identities. There is no submission fee. Writers may submit more than one script. Submissions from previous years are accepted, particularly if there is a new draft of the script.

contains significant Jewish themes, characters, content, or points of view.
It is in English, or primarily in English – we love plays that play with languages.
It is It is full length, meaning over around 75 minutes in length. (For a guide, that usually means 60 pages or more. We DO NOT review 10 or 20 minute plays.)
It has not had a full production in the NY Metro region, or a major regional theater (LORT C or above).
The play has never been published in any form.

Showpeople Theatre Collective’s Inaugural Theatre Festival
SHOWPEOPLE THEATRE COLLECTIVE INC. is currently seeking new works by emerging artists for its first-ever theatre festival, to play in Long Island City, Queens, this coming December. We will be selecting two plays or musicals to take part in the inaugural Showpeople Theatre Festival, performing on a weekday during the first week of December.

o Eligibility: Solo shows and two-handers may be less likely to be chosen as we want to provide this opportunity to as many theatremakers as possible. Showpeople is all about big shows done simply
We may be less inclined to choose shows requiring substantial nudity or realistic looking weaponry. Any weapons used must be safe and clearly props (no sharp edges, no glass, no heavy metals, etc.)
Showpeople has a history of primarily supporting musical theatre, but straight plays will be given equal consideration
We will consider potential conflicts when deciding which slot your show gets Tuesday through Thursday, but it is ultimately up to the discretion of the Showpeople Theatre Festival coordinators
If chosen, consider your expenses before accepting admission into the festival. Showpeople Theatre Collective is not able to provide any funds for actors, crew, costumes, set, etc. (that being said, much great theatre can be done with minimal bells and whistles!)
You will have no rehearsal time in the space before your tech day of, so try to dry run your show in a similarly sized rehearsal room to make the transition as easy as possible
As mentioned above, your show’s performance will be given two three-hour time slots. The shows we’re producing in-house are all 120 minutes or less, so aim for this as a limit. This DOES NOT mean you absolutely can’t perform a longer show, but timing must be considered. For practical purposes, any show that seems like it may run too long for the time slot will be rejected

Emerging Artist Theater Spark Play Festival
The Spark Theatre Festival NYC is a three-week festival of self-produced works at every stage of development. The Fall Spark Theatre 2026 festival will take place from Oct 5th to Oct 25th 2026 at the 28th Street Theatre. For musical submissions, Emerging Artists is premiering a brand new festival just for musicals in November - the Spark Musical Theatre Festival. Details will be available soon.

o Eligibility: We will be breaking shows into two categories for the upcoming festival. Please pick the one that best fits what you want to present. Spark Theatre Festival will always remain a developmental new work festival. Your response will not affect your application. EAT requires each piece to attract at least 1 paying person per minute of their show. For instance, if you have a 10-minute piece, you must have a minimum of 10 paying audience members. Artists who do not meet this requirement must pay for EAT’s portion of the audience guarantee. You can, however, use your box office share to fill in the deficit to EAT, or give a tax-deductible donation to make up the difference. The festival is here to provide artists who are ready to attract a paying audience a place to present their work. For example, a solo artist with a 60-minute show who sells 60 tickets, makes $600 for their hour-long performance, and EAT’s 50% portion of the box office is also $600 (a 50/50 split). If they only sell 30 tickets at $20 each, EAT’s guarantee remains and will keep the entire $600. If they sell zero tickets, the artist must pay the audience guarantee to EAT, which would be $600 at the end of the evening.

Cry Havoc
We are pleased to announce the fourth annual cycle of PlayList, a short play development series. PlayList is a short play development series where a cohort of playwrights are selected to write new 10 minute plays inspired by creative prompts linked by a theme. Each playwright submits suggestions to fit the prompt, which always include a song related to the theme. The suggestions are “shuffled” among the playwrights to be used as inspiration points for their plays. Over the course of several moderated feedback sessions with our community of artists and invited guests, playwrights complete the project with a rigorously crafted, submission-ready short play, culminating in a public presentation of the work. PlayList is for writers of any background, identity, education or experience level who are interested in honing their work on a short script with a room full of artists experienced in new play development. The CRY HAVOC Company believes that writing a script doesn’t have to be a completely solitary experience. Collaborative feedback at key points in your writing process can bring you closer to your goals. Our approach to script development places your writing goals at the center of the workshop process, ensuring that collaborators are giving feedback that helps you write the play you are trying to write.

North Park Playwright Festival
Our goal in building the North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe was to provide a small theater to produce new, untested plays. In support of this goal we have produced the North Park Playwright Festival each October. The festival provides a platform for brand new, short (ten minute), plays written by playwrights from around the world. Over the past seventeen years more than 600 new plays have been produced. We encourage new directors and actors to become involved in theater through the festival as well. Through the North Park Playwright Festival over ninety playwrights, directors, and actors each year are able to showcase their talents. We invite interested playwrights to submit work to the festival. Please follow the guidelines below.

o Eligibility: Short new plays (no more than 12 pages, less is fine) that are easily staged and have casts with no more than four people. Our theater is very small and we normally use a minimal set concept in this festival. We have to be able to change sets in just a few minutes as we do six to seven plays each evening of the festival. We don't have space for large casts.
We request new work. A play that has had workshops or one or two previous productions is OK, but we are not interested in work that has been produced in numerous other places. Our goal in building the theater was to have a place to produce brand new work and let playwrights have a chance to see their work done for the first time.
We seek complete plays rather than excerpts from a larger work.
Work will be chosen by the directors we have in the festival. It is not a "contest" and we are not really judging plays in the formal sense. The directors choose the plays we will produce, within the production budget guidelines we give them.
Most subject matter is OK. We don't do nudity or off color humor.
We ask that all submissions be sent to us via snail mail at the theater. Address is: North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe, 2031 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92104, Attn Summer Golden, Artistic Director. We have too much trouble with differing email, word processing, and computer platform issues to take them via email. Additionally, our selection process requires the directors read the plays submitted and the cost of printing all the plays we receive each year is prohibitive. Please insure submissions have a title page with complete contact information (including email), a character summary, and are in proper script form. There is no charge to enter. No need to go to the post office. You can just staple your play together, put in a business size envelope and drop in the mail. You can print on both sides if you want to save postage.
Submissions must be postmarked by June 30, 2026. Please do not send plays by any method that requires a signature from us. We are not often at the theater when delivery occurs. We will email notice of receipt to all playwrights submitting plays.
Send only one script. Multiple submissions do not increase chances of production.

Masque & Spectacle
Masque & Spectacle reads submissions for its bi-annual issues November 1 – January 31 and May 1 – July 31. Submissions received outside of this time period will be automatically deleted. Responses can be expected within a month. Acceptance rate is around 10%. We do not accept previously published work, and we ask for First Electronic Rights and Non-Exclusive Archival Rights upon acceptance. Unfortunately, we are unable to pay contributors at this time. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please let us know if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

o Eligibility: We welcome 10-minute plays (up to approximately 10 pages in length). No full-length plays will be considered at this time.
While traditional plays are welcome, we are particularly interested in innovative and/or interdisciplinary texts that break new ground, either in relation to their subject matter, or in how the text itself is performed/written/represented on stage.
Playwrights may submit one previously unpublished 10-minute play for consideration. The script should be accompanied by a cover letter, which includes your name, address, phone number, and email address. Proper playwriting format should be used. If you are uncertain about this format, several examples can be found online.

2026 LSU SciArt New Play Festival
Louisiana State University (LSU) is proud to announce the return of the SciArts New Play Festival, taking place in the Fall of 2026. Co-sponsored by the LSU College of Science, the LSU School of Theatre, and the LSU Office of Research and Economic Development, this groundbreaking festival will showcase staged readings of new accurate science plays selected from submissions across the nation. The LSU SciArts New Play Festival is now accepting submissions. We are inviting playwrights to submit their original, unpublished, full-length play that explore the intersections of science and art. Playwrights selected will be flown to Baton Rouge for rehearsals, offering them the opportunity to refine their works in collaboration with experienced theatre professionals. Additionally, playwrights selected will receive a cash reward and recognition of their contribution to the festival.

Vanguard Arts Fund
Vanguard Arts Fund applications are now open for Olney Theatre Center’s 2026-27 season. The Vanguard Arts Fund provides developmental support to diverse teams of artists interested in creating theatrical works. We commit to these artistic teams in hopes of producing their work at Olney Theatre Center in a future season. The Vanguard Arts Fund was launched in 2017 with a $350,000 endowment gift from the Eugene B. Casey Foundation; the Fund’s success in developing shows we’ve gone on to produce prompted the Foundation to add $1 million to the endowment in 2022. We are interested in supporting the development of new full-length plays and musicals and reimagining pre-existing stories. We emphasize process over product and will work to create an environment in which you can do your best work. We are proud to have supported many projects led by BIPOC generative artists and encourage artists of every background to submit their work to us.

Exhume Submissions for Fall 2026
We strive to publish visual art, poetry, prose, and drama in order to help writers who discuss queerness and trauma find a home for their works. Though we especially seek submissions that discuss these topics, we accept good writing across the board. We appreciate work that speaks to the human experience on a raw level. Consider works like Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl,” Jo Ann Beard’s “The Fourth State of Matter,” and John Cheever’s “The Swimmer.” Above all else, we want writing that makes us feel something. Writing can be traditional, experimental, or a hybrid of the two. Surprise us! We accept both established and emerging artists and writers across the board. We welcome simultaneous submissions, though we ask that you let us know immediately should your submission be accepted somewhere else. At this time we do not accept previously published work.

The Woodward/Newman Award
The Woodward/Newman Award is an exclusive honor offered by Constellation Stage & Screen, started through the support of Joanne Woodward, Newman’s Own Foundation, and the Newman family, celebrating Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward’s tremendous history of work on stage and screen. It presents the best unpublished play of the year with a cash prize of $3,000 and a full production as part of Constellation’s Mainstage season. Please note that there are significant changes to our submission and selection process from previous years. In order to make the Woodward/Newman Award accessible to all, we have eliminated submission fees as well as the contest format. The Woodward/Newman Award will continue to be awarded to an unpublished new play once per year and come with a $3,000 cash prize and a full production. Submissions will be accepted and reviewed by our literary team on an ongoing basis, and will be considered for the award as well as for all 7 production slots in our season. So a play that is not selected for the Woodward/Newman slot in our season, may still be considered and selected for production. This will allow us to now accept open submissions for all types of plays (including TYA shows). Plays submitted by midnight, August 31st, 2026 will be considered for the 2027-28 season, while plays submitted beyond that date will be considered for the 2028-29 Season. All submissions will be kept on file for 2 years after submission.

o Submission Guidelines: We are currently accepting submissions for the 2027-28 Woodward/Newman Award. The award recipient will be announced by May 15, 2027. The winner will be awarded $3,000 and a full production.
“Full-length” plays should have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes). TYA shows should have a complete running time of over 40 minutes.
Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission (independently published is acceptable).

You will be asked to submit your play as an attachment and all other information (bio, history, synopsis, character breakdown) will be entered into a form. Musical submissions may upload demos as an attachment or include a link to a shared folder.

$3,000 cash prize is in lieu of royalties for the full production. Housing & transportation will also be provided.
Any unpublished play submitted to Constellation regardless of method (e.g. online form, agent submission, direct contact) may be considered for the Woodward/Newman Award.

Blackboard Plays - Reading Series Submission

Neurodivergent New Play Series
Neurodivergent playwrights in NYC since 2023 - is accepting recurring submissions as we prepare for our 2024-25 Season.All submissions should be for full-length plays between 45 to 180 minutes long and may have received a previous reading or production outside of NYC, as long as they are unpublished. All neurodivergent/disabled writers (autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, OCD, Tourette's, etc.) at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply - especially BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and female-identifying writers. There is no submission fee or any other fee for being involved in this process.

Freshwater Theatre

SCRIPT SUBMISSIONS
The Black List x TRW Collection
The Black List and Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW) have partnered to publish and license a minimum of six plays annually from writers discovered on blcklst.com. The six plays will be published and licensed under The Black List x TRW Collection, which will make the work accessible to a wide range of customers, including schools, colleges and universities, community and regional theaters, and more. The Black List and TRW hope to add at least six plays each year to The Collection. All writers are welcome to submit their plays for consideration. Writers will be invited to contribute to The Collection semi-annually, with semi-annual review cycles deadlines on the first of May and November each year. The next cycle deadline will be November 1, 2026.

Cinimientos
IATI Theater is accepting scripts for its 2027 Cimientos Season. Submissions are only accepted through the electronic form–see link below. Make sure to read guidelines before completing the submission form.. Cimientos is IATI Theater’s Play Development Program. We provide playwrights the opportunity to develop new, never-before produced plays through a community of cutting-edge theater artists. Through the PPP* and SRP*, Cimientos amplifies as clearly as possible the voice of the author who lays the foundations from which a dramatic work is conceived. Like IATI Theater, Cimientos is committed to supporting playwrights and works that push conventions and explore the avant-garde. We recognize, however, that what is different and ground-breaking is not always what is unconventional and, therefore, we also welcome plays that explore realism and naturalism in innovative ways.

This program is open to authors worldwide who have original works in English or Spanish and are interested in feedback from a New York audience.
The playwright must commit to participating in the PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel) meetings, which will be held online. The PPP will meet for ten (10) consecutive weeks from December 2025 to February 2026.
The playwright must commit to participating in their post-reading talk-back, either in person or via video conference. Staged readings will take place at our theater space in the East Village in June 2026.
Applicant must be the original creator of the submitted work and the sole owner of its rights. By submitting their work, applicants grant IATI Theater permission to use the submitted materials for the Cimientos Program.
The submission must be a completed, new, full-length play that has not had a previous professional production. The playwright must state on the online form if the play has undergone a workshop, staged reading, or development of any kind. We encourage plays in an early stage of development.
Submissions must be non-published work. Published plays in any format are not acceptable.
Only one play may be submitted per playwright per season.
Scripts must be between 45–90 minutes in length.
The play must have five (5) actors or fewer. Plays with more than five characters that do not provide a clear double-role explanation for staging will not be reviewed. This must be clearly expressed in the online form.
The author’s name(s) should not appear anywhere within the script or file. Any authorship information must not be visible in the play document or file. The Cimientos selection panel reads submissions ‘blind’ to let the quality of the work speak for itself and to keep our judging process as equitable as possible.
All documents must be submitted as a PDF file. Other formats will not be accepted.
Submissions for the 2027 Season will only be accepted between June 1 to June 30, 2026.

Each October we produce a stage show of horror themed plays for a live audience at Le Chat Noir theatre in Augusta, GA. This live show also gets released as an episode on our podcast and YouTube. If you would like to submit a script to Stage Frights 2026, please read the guidelines below.

16th Annual Short Play Festival: Merciless Indian Savages: A Native Perspective about the Declaration of Independence and U.S. History
With the upcoming 250th anniversary of 1776 and the Declaration of Independence, it is only appropriate that our theme for the 16th Annual Short Play Festival addresses this historical event.
"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal..." Many Americans learned the preamble of the Declaration of Independence while in elementary school and proudly recited it from memory. However, most are unaware that in this same document about the importance of equality, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the following phrase: “Merciless Indian Savages.” Native Playwrights, tell us about what this country does (or does not) teach about the original Inhabitants. This is your opportunity to create your own "Idiot's Guide to Native American History" through storytelling. Correct wrongs, offer counter-narratives, share crazy encounters you have had with the US and Canada’s warped sense of Native people, or just poke fun at all the misinformation about our people. We are not asking you to be merciless or savage, but we do ask that you be unapologetically Native! Selected short plays will be performed in an afternoon of staged readings, where playwrights have a chance to win the Thomas Studies Gadugi Audience Prize of $500 and the Von Marie Atchley Playwright Award of $1,000.

Torch Literary Arts welcomes submissions of original creative work by Black women writers. The Tank Presents
Each season, our The Tank Presents program serves hundreds of emerging artists as they create over 1000 performances of new works in music, theater, film, dance, comedy, and storytelling. As part of our mission to remove the economic barriers from the creation of new work, we never charge our artists to use our space for their performances! Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest
To encourage the development of quality theatrical materials for the educational, community and children’s theatre markets, Pioneer Drama Service is proud to sponsor the annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest.
This is an ongoing contest, with a winner selected by June 1 each year from all eligible submissions received the previous year. All eligible plays accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists, from which the winner will be selected. The contest winner will receive a $1,000 royalty advance in addition to publication.

Plays with elaborate set, costume or technical requirements are not appealing because of the limited resources of many of our customers. Pictures, sketches or descriptions of your vision are always helpful.
We recommend your submissions have had at least one production or reading, hopefully staged. We feel this fundamental field test is necessary before a play can be considered for publication since plays are created for the purpose of performance.
Manuscripts must be computer-printed in dark ink. We do not require specific formatting. However, your efforts to ensure your script is free of misspellings and typos will help the submissions editor.

Urban Stages Emerging Playwright Award
Our $500 Emerging Playwright Award (coupled with press coverage) is given to playwrights who show excellence and dedication throughout this process – from development to the stage. Out of hundreds of submissions a year, we select 15-20 plays for readings. From these, we select 1-3 plays annually to go on to our workshopping phase. Our workshops are meant to prepare a play for our Off-Broadway stage. Starline Theater Company is seeking a director for a developmental reading and subsequent full-production of a new play Bike Path by Adaline Gomez. Cathy and Thea are stuck at home during a pandemic event. Thea has started riding her bike fifteen miles to the end of the bike path each day where Cathy hangs out behind her mom’s apartment after work. Against all odds they become friends. They watch the birds, they watch the world fall apart, they argue and they change one another and then they meet someone who disrupts everything and maybe gives their anger and disillusionment some form or direction. They figure out what it means to “do something.” This is not exactly the world you know or the time that you think it is. It is also not some other place, or some other country, at another time. We are here now and we have been for a while. We are aiming to produce a free, public reading of the play in August or September of 2026 and hope to find someone with experience/interest in new play development. UCROSS FELLOWSHIP FOR NATIVE AMERICAN WRITERS - 2027
Current work is requested. An applicant's work sample and project description are the most significant feature of their application. Unless work is interdisciplinary, i.e. the various genres interconnect, each applicant is encouraged to apply in a primary discipline and submit a work sample and project description that emphasizes this single discipline. Competition for residencies varies annually and with the number of applications. While only one Fellowship winner will be selected, all applicants will have the option of being considered for a general Ucross residency.

Steven Schwartzberg Grants for Mental Health & Wellness
Writers are the beating heart of theater, whom we rely upon to take us on journeys and inspire us to think. During these unprecedented times, DGF has created the Steven Schwartzberg Grants to provide financial support for mental health and wellness services for writers. To help connect writers to therapists, DGF has partnered with Advekit, an online therapist matching service, to expand access to mental health support that might be out of your reach.

This creative curated rental program has allowed many upstart companies and emerging artists to realize their full artistic vision on a small budget. The program provides subsidized performance and rehearsal space, technical assistance, and administrative support, including a fully staffed box office. Cry Havoc Playwriting Residencies
CRY HAVOC is centering our programming around a keystone of Playwriting Residencies. Through a series of moderated workshop sessions utilizing the CRY HAVOC approach to play development, we provide a community rich in artists devoted to and practiced in the development of new work to support the playwright in bringing their script closer to their goals. o Eligibility: The CRY HAVOC Approach helps the playwright write the play they are trying to write.
The CRY HAVOC Approach provides targeted feedback to bring the playwright closer to their goals. This requires that they communicate those goals clearly— feedback can only be helpful if the writer knows what they are looking for (even if they discover something else).
The CRY HAVOC Approach demands focused feedback— responding to the writer’s goals— backed up with evidence from the text. This results in a community rich in artists devoted to and practiced in the development of new work.
To anchor our approach, CRY HAVOC opens each feedback session by asking the playwright our fundamental question: “What are you working on?”
Artcroft Center for Arts and Humanities
Residencies of an average of 2-8 weeks for visual artists, writers, actors, and performance artists. Residency provides housing, studio, and meals; artist responsible residency fee ($40/day), deposit (10% of residency fee), travel, materials, and local transportation.
