The Democracy Cycle 2025 

Over a 5-year period, The Democracy Cycle – a collaboration between the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) and Civis Foundation (an affiliate of Galvan Initiatives) – will commission and develop a total of 25 new performing arts works across the fields of theater, dance, music, opera, and multi-disciplinary performance that express themes related to the nature and practice of democracy, particularly as it is practiced in the United States. Purpose

  • Our hope is that the commissioned projects will enrich and expand discussion of and participation in democracy – be it in the national, state, regional, or hyperlocal community realm – as it is practiced within the United States and worldwide. The Democracy Cycle project is inspired by the following beliefs:Democratic values are a global expression of humanity's striving to live with one another with respect and in peace.

  • Democracy, as practiced in the United States, includes a history of founding exclusions. It has been, and must continue to be, the ongoing work of our society to expand upon the ideals of inclusivity embedded in our founding documents.

  • Democracy faces significant perceived and actual threats in the current moment, both domestically and internationally.

  • The Intersection of capitalism and democracy creates both opportunities and tensions.

  • Artists are the beating heart of democratic values because of their ability to imagine new worlds, envision new possibilities, and provoke meaningful discourse across divides.

The primary focus of The Democracy Cycle will be on democracy as it is currently being practiced in the United States. However, commissioned projects may include references to democracies worldwide provided they have potential for informing and deepening our understanding of American democracy.

  • Propose a new live performance work which may be at any stage of development, but may not be planned to premiere before May 1, 2025. (Remounts of previously completed/premiered works are ineligible.)

  • Propose a new live performance work which is planned to be completed in 2026, 2027, or 2028.

  • Be prepared to manage the income-tax implications of accepting a commission from a U.S.-based arts organization. (U.S. citizenship is not a requirement, this is a national and international open call.)

Brave Voices Short Play Festival 

Are you a playwright with a passion for telling stories that center around LGBTQIA+, POC, and other marginalized voices? We want to hear from you! Brave Voices, a short-play festival celebrating underrepresented perspectives, is now accepting submissions of original 10-minute plays. Theme: Stories must center around LGBTQIA+, POC, or marginalized characters. All genres (including horror) are welcome. Length: 10-minute plays (approximately 8–10 pages). Originality: All plays must be unpublished (though prior productions are permitted) and should be suitable for a low-budget black box theater.

The Players Theatre Short Play Festival 

New York City is like no other place in the world! We are seeking plays that get to the heart of the Big Apple and explore what makes this town tick. Unique New York – it's more than a tongue twister – it is a way of life! Plays must be NYC–themed or have something to do with living in NYC. Descriptions of past plays are here. Performances: Plays run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm, Sundays at 3pm on one of three weekends June 5 – 22, 2025. There is a mandatory 45-minute tech rehearsal on the Sunday before that play's weekend.

  • This is a self-produced short play festival in a 50-seat black box theatre located at 115 MacDougal St., NYC. It is upstairs at the Players Theatre in the Steve and Marie Sgouros Theatre. We provide lighting and sound in our 50-seat black box.

  • No restrictions on eligibility – all over 18 years of age are welcome to submit

  • Playwrights may submit up to two plays

  • No plays that have been/will be produced within 2 months before or after in the NYC area

  • Playwrights will be notified within 2 weeks of submission deadline as to whether their play has been accepted or declined

Veterans Repertory Theater 

Savage Wonder prides itself on opportunities for veteran writers. Savage Wonder offers on-going playwrighting competitions as well as the Savage Wonder literary blog. You may select which opportunity interests you below.

  • Immediate family of the service member.

MAC Theater Playwrights Incubator

The MAC Theater Playwrights Incubator is a program for first-time playwrights to see their work realized on the stage. Finding theaters to produce new or unpublished plays can be an obstacle for any new playwright. The MAC Theater Playwrights Incubator is a structured program that aims to discover and support, through workshop and production, new stage plays by first time, unpublished regional playwrights. These plays are small cast shows with one to six characters. Selected playwrights will work with two mentors who are experienced theater artists to fine-tune their plays over the course of several months and prepare the script for production. After regular writing evaluations and the script is ready, the mentors will work with the MAC to find a director and assist her or him in casting the show with appropriate actors. One or more readings with a select focus group audience will include a feedback-response process, and the end result is a completed script, ready for debut performance for a live audience on stage at the Marion Art Center.

Sewanee Writers' Conference


We are now accepting applications to the 2024 Sewanee Writers' Conference! The Conference dates are July 15-27. Apply now to work with our stellar faculty line-up for this summer! The application deadline is March 1. There is no application fee, and scholarships and fellowships are available.

City Theatre Seeks 10 Minute Plays for the Susan J Westfall National Short Playwriting Contest


City Theatre is looking for the best short plays from all over for our upcoming 2024-25 season that furthers our mission to identify, acknowledge, and award excellence in dramatic writing. Having produced hundreds of plays, we want scripts that are lively and timely, hilarious, provocative, poignant, and surprising. We look for plays that span style and genre. We will consider bilingual scripts and ten-minute musicals. We have no restriction on the age range of the characters. In other words, we are seeking compelling plays that rise above the ordinary. City Theatre seeks compelling plays that rise above the ordinary. Playwrights from across the country are invited to submit lively, timely, hilarious, provocative, poignant, and surprising scripts. We look for plays that span style and genre. We will consider bilingual scripts and ten-minute musicals. Blackboard Plays - Reading Series Submission

Founded in 2008, Blackboard Plays has been devoted to Black Playwrights throughout the African Diaspora.

Neurodivergent New Play Series 


Neurodivergent playwrights in NYC since 2023 - is accepting recurring submissions as we prepare for our 2024-25 Season.All submissions should be for full-length plays between 45 to 180 minutes long and may have received a previous reading or production outside of NYC, as long as they are unpublished. All neurodivergent/disabled writers (autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, OCD, Tourette's, etc.) at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply - especially BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and female-identifying writers. There is no submission fee or any other fee for being involved in this process.

SCRIPT SUBMISSIONS

Woodward/Newman Award 2026-2027 


The Woodward/Newman Award is an exclusive honor offered by Constellation Stage & Screen, started through the support of Joanne Woodward, Newman's Own Foundation, and the Newman family, celebrating Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward's tremendous history of work on stage and screen. It presents the best unpublished play of the year with a cash prize of $3,000 and a full production as part of Constellation's Mainstage season. Please note that there are significant changes to our submission and selection process from previous years. In order to make the Woodward/Newman Award accessible to all, we have eliminated submission fees as well as the contest format. The Woodward/Newman Award will continue to be awarded to an unpublished new play once per year and come with a $3,000 cash prize and a full production. Submissions will be accepted and reviewed by our literary team on an ongoing basis, and will be considered for the award as well as for all 7 production slots in our season. So a play that is not selected for the Woodward/Newman slot in our season, may still be considered and selected for production. This will allow us to now accept open submissions for all types of plays (including TYA shows).  Plays submitted by midnight, August 31st, 2025 will be considered for the 2026-27 season, while plays submitted beyond that date will be considered for the 2027-28 Season. All submissions will be kept on file for 2 years after submission.

Keegan Theatre 2025 Boiler Room Series 


The Keegan Theatre believes that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are essential in the open and honest exploration of the human condition. Through a commitment to these tenets in casting, staffing, and the selection of works, Keegan aims to enrich our world through art and action. Keegan Theatre, a professional non-equity theater in Washington, DC, is now accepting submissions from playwrights for a unique opportunity that includes a commission, development process, and full production of a new work. Two playwrights will be chosen to either create a brand-new play or complete an unfinished work to reach a workshop-ready draft. This process will include a workshop leading to a public reading, interview, and audience talkback, culminating in a world premiere full production as part of Keegan's highly anticipated 30th Anniversary 2026-2027 season.

Community Players Theater seeks full-length plays. Enhanced Staged Reading: There will be sets, costumes, and props. It is a short rehearsal process which is why we are not requiring memorization. Live & In Color Musical Theatre Development Program


Live & In Color is looking for playwrights, composers, and lyricists of color and/or other underrepresented communities interested in developing their new musical. The selected musical submission will have a one-week workshop in the fall at The Bingham Camp in Salem, Connecticut culminating in a staged presentation to an invited audience. Writers receive a $1,000 stipend plus housing, meals, and travel. We provide support including a several-month development period based on needs of the composer/writers leading up to the retreat. Live & In Color staff will continue the support the development of your piece beyond the retreat including a reading for industry and Broadway Alums.

Talking It Out: A Virtual Festival in Support of Mental Health Awareness

The Talking It Out Virtual Arts Festival in support of mental health empowerment, is thrilled to be returning this Fall after a year-long hiatus! We are now accepting play submissions to be featured in our new ongoing series of live play readings in NYC and audio drama podcast to be featured worldwide. This year, we will be accepting submissions for short plays, (less than 20 minutes) one-act plays, (20-40 minutes) & full-length plays (60-120 minutes) of all genres, including comedy, drama, sci-fi, horror, experimental, etc. Plays will be accepted on an ongoing basis, with playwrights to be notified at least 3 months in advance of their proposed performance date.

Nomad Theater 

Nomad Theatre seeks new unproduced short plays to be a part of our upcoming season! Our mission is to provide an immersive theatre experience by exposing audience members to eclectic and moving stories, taking theatre outside of a traditional theatre space and into site-specific locations. Each season, our The Tank Presents program serves hundreds of emerging artists as they create over 1000 performances of new works in music, theater, film, dance, comedy, and storytelling. As part of our mission to remove the economic barriers from the creation of new work, we never charge our artists to use our space for their performances! Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest 

To encourage the development of quality theatrical materials for the educational, community and children's theatre markets, Pioneer Drama Service is proud to sponsor the annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest.

This is an ongoing contest, with a winner selected by June 1 each year from all eligible submissions received the previous year.  All eligible plays accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists, from which the winner will be selected.  The contest winner will receive a $1,000 royalty advance in addition to publication.

Inouye National Center for the Preservation of Democracy at the Japanese American National Museum invites applications to the second annual Irene Yamamoto Arts Writers Fellowship. The 2025 Yamamoto Fellowship will grant two $5,000 unrestricted awards to two emerging writers of color who write critically about theater, dance, and/or performance art. The Yamamoto Fellowship encourages emerging arts writers of color to write about works from their own cultural and political perspectives, enriching and broadening cultural criticism as a practice and profession. Theater, dance, and performance art were selected for 2025 because these art forms are still struggling in the wake of setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic. The fellowship receives support from Critical Minded, an initiative to invest in cultural critics of color cofounded by the Nathan Cummings Foundation and the Ford Foundation.

The Inkwell Theater Development LAB


A unique program in Los Angeles, the LAB aims to bring the writer out of their office, or coffee shop, and into the rehearsal room. While we recognize the necessity for writers to work on their own, we believe that nothing benefits works-in-progress more than artistic collaboration. The LAB is focused on developing new plays through a collaborative workshop process. We believe that by working in a rehearsal setting with a director and actors, a playwright can best further their plays. Playwrights tell us often how they gained new insights from simply seeing their work with a cast, not to mention the constructive input from directors and other artists.We  begin with a writer and their first draft. During a 3-week intensive process, writers will not only see and hear that draft as written but will also see their rewrites, changes, and inspired ideas come to life. This is aided by introducing an experienced and versatile director, bringing their own unique insights to the play. Mixing in a cast of talented performers only adds to the volume of artistic brainpower being brought to bear upon the play. And pulling the playwright into the rehearsal room brings the whole thing together.

2050 Administrative Fellowship  

We're now accepting applications for the 2024/25 Season 2050 Administrative Fellowship program — a sister program to our successful 2050 Artistic Fellowship, which supports emerging playwrights and directors. The fellowship represents one of several NYTW initiatives to address the economic barriers that may prevent talented individuals from pursuing careers in the theatre. The 2050 Fellowship is named in celebration of the U.S. Census Bureau's projection that by the year 2050, there will be no single racial or ethnic majority in the United States. This projection provokes thoughts at New York Theatre Workshop about the transformations that will take place in the American landscape—technologically, environmentally, demographically, economically and artistically—now and in the future. They are a catalyst for broader questions about the direction of our field. But we're not waiting for the year 2050 to make the change we wish to see. Instead, we're working to reflect our evolving and beautifully diversifying society now—to ensure there's space for those who will lead us into the future to build the skills they need now The 2050 Administrative Fellowship program is designed to provide first-rate instruction and mentorship to professionals who are underrepresented in the field of theatre administration. The Alpine Fellowship 


The winner of the Theatre Prize will receive a cash prize to support the writing of their proposed play, and the runners up will receive travel expense support that must be used to attend our 2025 symposium - dates and venue to be announced.

The Democracy Cycle 

Over a five-year period, The Democracy Cycle will commission and develop 25 new performing arts works across the fields of theater, dance, music, opera, and multi-disciplinary performance. The commissioned works, to be selected over the course of three annual Rounds of Open Calls (2024, 2025, and 2026) will explore themes relating to the nature, practice, and experience of democracy. Our hope is that projects commissioned as part of The Democracy Cycle will enrich and expand the discussion around and participation in democracy – be it in the national, state, regional, or hyperlocal community realm – as it is practiced both within the United States and worldwide. The Cycle will provide $60,000 in support to each awarded project, consisting of a $30,000 commission as well as an additional $30,000 towards each commissioned project's development process (research, readings, workshops etc.). The commissions will be awarded across three annual Open Calls, beginning in January 2024. In each Open Call, The Democracy Cycle will commission at least eight projects.

Audible is dedicated to commissioning, developing, and producing work that reflects the diversity of our members and our world. This creative curated rental program has allowed many upstart companies and emerging artists to realize their full artistic vision on a small budget. The program provides subsidized performance and rehearsal space, technical assistance, and administrative support, including a fully staffed box office. RESIDENCIES 

Edward F. Albee Foundation Residency 

The Edward F. Albee Foundation maintains the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (better known as "The Barn") in Montauk, Long Island, New York, as a residence for writers and visual artists of all media. We are proud to be ADA-accessible and open our doors to all creative people. The Center is open year-round (with the exception of December, when it is closed for general maintenance and holidays), and can accommodate four creative persons at a time. Residencies are for calendar months only. The standards for admission are, simply, talent and need. Located approximately two miles from the center of Montauk and the Atlantic Ocean, "The Barn" rests in a secluded knoll which offers privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. The Foundation expects all those accepted for residence to work seriously and to conduct themselves in such a manner as to aid fellow residents in their endeavors. Writers and visual artists are offered individual en-suite bedrooms and separate working studios. Residents are responsible for their food, travel, and other expenses. The environment is simple and communal. Residents are expected to do their share in maintaining the condition of "The Barn" as well as its peaceful environment.

Centaur Theatre Residency - Winterworks 

WinterWorks fosters innovation and creativity in the Montreal performing arts community. Providing a dedicated platform for experimentation and artistry that challenges convention, this year's WinterWorks Festival–previously known as Wildside–is looking to support projects that take artistic risks, ask innovative questions, and explore form. Come and develop the theatrical ambition of your project at Centaur. Open to applications from established companies and emerging artists alike, Winterworks will select exciting, boundary-pushing performance projects that are already under-development, and looking for support towards their next stage of evolution–leading up to their first encounter with an audience.
