It's about standing strong as an individual, couple or group of people before, during, through and after adversity comes into their lives. It's about how to stay strong during difficult times. It must be a story that is a story and not a lecture to push your views on others. It must be about everyday people and their everyday lives and how they stand strong during adversity. Sound Balance

SOUND BALANCE is a new musical developmental reading and commissioning initiative, exclusively for women and nonbinary writers and composers. The initiative is a partnership between GLG, the first (and only) U.S.-based organization dedicated to developing and producing musical theater by women and non-binary writers and composers, and leading creative and producing professionals across theater, film and television whose work is related to musical theater. The program is a direct extension of GLG's mission: To close the gender gap in musical theater authorship, and connect early career creators with those successfully developing musical content both in theater and other mediums. Sound Balance is open to women and nonbinary integrated musical theater writers (meaning those individuals who write book, music and lyrics solo) or writing teams (consisting of composer, lyricist, bookwriter, or some combination of the above).

o Deadline: January 15

o Application Fee: No Fee

o Eligibility: To apply, applicants must submit the following work samples from a musical theater piece. Submissions will be open until 11:59 PM ET on January 15, 2025, or when 250 submissions are received:

  • A 20-25-page script excerpt (PDF format)

  • 5 song demos (.mp3, .mp4, or .wav format)

  • Lyric sheets for the selected songs (PDF format)

  • Full script (PDF format)

  • Work samples from musical podcasts, musical film or TV scripts, musical video games, or any other content forms that the creator(s) would call a "musical," in addition to stage musicals, are entirely welcome. Submissions will reviewed by a panel of industry members. The selected writer or writing team will receive a $3000 commission for the first draft of a piece of their choosing from GLG's slate of projects in development, culminating in an industry reading in late 2025.

Greenwood Lake Theater New Works Series

Greenwood Lake Theater is seeking submissions for their upcoming New Works Series, which will be produced in spring of 2025. Each selected play will receive a short workshop and produced staged reading at our home theater in Mountain Lake Park (Warwick, NY). This project is made possible by a grant through Arts Mid-Hudson. Both full-length and one-act length (of at least approx. 40 minutes) plays/musicals will be considered. We are not considering any shorter scripts- such as 10-minute plays- for this particular project. We are specifically seeking plays that have not yet had any kind of public presentation. While all submissions will be considered, we particularly encourage BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ playwrights to submit their work, as well as any playwrights local to the Hudson Valley region. The dates listed represent the full time frame for the project. The time commitment for each project is 2 days, plus 2 virtual production meetings. Selected plays will receive two days of workshop/rehearsal time, followed by a public presentation staged reading. There will be a Q&A/talkback after each staged reading, so that both the playwright and Greenwood Lake Theater may gather thoughts and reactions from the audience. While these will not be full productions, we would like to give them enough staging/basic technical design to suggest what a full production may look like. Each play will have a director and designer, hired by Greenwood Lake Theater. The playwright will have the opportunity to meet with them in the weeks leading up to their workshop so that they may collaborate on a vision for the piece. Each playwright selected will be paid an honorarium for their participation in this series. All directors, designers, and actors will be paid as well. The public presentations of these works will be free for the public to attend, and will take place at our home theater at Mountain Lake Park in Warwick, NY. Selected playwrights will be notified by January 31, 2025. We anticipate presenting these works from March to May 2025 One of the aims of this series is to help foster dialogue between playwrights and theater producers. We have received many script submissions over the years, and are rarely able to produce any of them. Not because they aren't wonderful scripts, but because they are in some way unscalable for a small Equity regional theater. We will provide feedback for every submission received. We are not looking to influence what anyone writes. But for playwrights who are seeking to have their plays produced and seen, we hope to offer greater insight into the logistics of what smaller companies can/can't do, so that their plays are sent to companies that best align with the needs of their work.

Beyond Woodstock

The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival happened over a half-century ago in beautiful. Sullivan County, NY. The cultural impact of this monumental gathering is like a glorious tree that keeps growing and sharing its fruits as a catalyst and breakthrough moment in music, art, crafts, spirituality, and back-to-nature movements while promoting independence, self-abidance, group collaboration, and peaceful political protest. As the Catskill Public Theater (CPT) approaches our Summer 2025 season, we plan to present a series of skits that expand on the themes and messages that still resonate with the Woodstock phenomena. We envision this production of vignettes being dramatic as well as comedic, presented in a format that will include original content, dynamic multi-media sequences, music of the day, along with visual projections of iconic and previously unseen images taken by the recently discovered photographer, Mark Goff, whose collection is represented by CPT creative director Nick Clemente. To support this production, we are sponsoring a "Call for Submissions" for original ideas that could be part of the short scenes, sketches, and mini-plays, amplifying the Woodstock Festival message. We invite the public to share their direct experience or even their imaginative experiences for inclusion in this play. Any length will work. We encourage expansive, unexpected, and surprising connections to the Woodstock festival. Let your creative flag fly!

o Deadline: January 1

o Application Fee: No Fee

o Eligibility: Submissions will be curated by Jessica López-Barkl and Nick López, Professors of Theater and Speech at SUNY Sullivan. They will chair a jury that will include Nick Clemente and Marshall Shnider, Founding Director of CPT. Selected submissions will be a part of the final production of "Beyond Woodstock" and will be paid an honorarium of $200. All submissions will receive three free reservations for any CPT production during our 2025 season.

We're the only short musical theatre festival that offers artists honorariums and rehearsal reimbursements for each piece. That being said, there are some out-of-pocket costs depending on your show's requirements (cast & creative team size, number of rehearsals, size of rehearsal space, etc.) and personal choice. Most of these costs relate to specific set-dressing, props and costumes for your show and additional personnel such as musicians.

  o Deadline: January 3

  • Each musical must not exceed ten minutes when performed. If accepted, cuts may be required.

  • Longer one-acts or full-length musicals will not be considered, although the submission may be a 10-minute portion of a longer piece as long as it tells a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end story arc.

  • A musical may be a previously-produced work with a production history.

  • We have no formal script formatting guidelines, but all scripts should be easy to read.

Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest

To encourage the development of quality theatrical materials for the educational, community and children's theatre markets, Pioneer Drama Service is proud to sponsor the annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest.

This is an ongoing contest, with a winner selected by June 1 each year from all eligible submissions received the previous year.  All eligible plays accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists, from which the winner will be selected.  The contest winner will receive a $1,000 royalty advance in addition to publication.

o Deadline: Ongoing

o Application Fee: None

o Eligibility: You can start the submission process by contacting us here.

  • We will only consider manuscripts with a running time between 20 and 90 minutes.

  • Submissions must be family friendly in both subject and language. NO cursing. NO explicitly adult content.

  • We prefer casts that are either balanced or favoring females. The more gender neutral roles, the better.

  • We favor plays and musicals with ensemble casts, where more than just a few have a chance to shine.

  • Plays with elaborate set, costume or technical requirements are not appealing because of the limited resources of many of our customers. Pictures, sketches or descriptions of your vision are always helpful.

  • We recommend your submissions have had at least one production or reading, hopefully staged. We feel this fundamental field test is necessary before a play can be considered for publication since plays are created for the purpose of performance.

  • Manuscripts must be computer-printed in dark ink. We do not require specific formatting. However, your efforts to ensure your script is free of misspellings and typos will help the submissions editor.

  • We hope that Pioneer Drama is your first choice as a publisher, and we encourage you to submit to us exclusively. However, we do accept simultaneous submissions with the understanding that you will accept the first contract you're offered and not use the situation to seek multiple offers from which to choose. If you receive another offer, please notify us immediately so we may rescind your submission.

  • The following information must accompany your submission or query:

  • 100-200 word synopsis.

  • Cast list that indicates the number of female roles, the number of male roles and the number of roles that can be performed by either gender. We do not accept one-person shows.

  • Running time.

  • CD and/or score for musicals. We appreciate the opportunity to hear the music, if possible.

  • Set design(s). Please feel free to provide diagrams and/or pictures.

  • Proof of production or staged reading (i.e., review, program, etc.) A DVD of your performance is ideal, though not required.

  • Age of intended audience.

  • A self-addressed envelope of sufficient size with appropriate postage for the return of your materials. We will NOT return manuscripts or accompanying material if this is not included.

  • Cover letter and/or resume.

Come Flower, Come Flame - Emerging Artist's Spark Theatre Festival NYC

"Come Flower, Come Flame" is a radical and moving tale of reclaiming the femme body through grief. J, the elder self, moves back through time to find her younger self, L, frozen in grief over the recent death of her father. While in mourning, L's grief is sexualized and objectified by men, echoing an inner conflict: "Am I meant to be frozen?" As J dances with the memory of a time since the past, she encourages L's journey from the frozen towards the flame: from loss into love, and from what grieving 'ought to look like' into an ownership which transforms the body and the soul.

The program is one of the largest of its kind in the Upper Midwest. Since the Center opened in 1995, over 900 artists from 45 states and 40 countries have participated in the program. Residents have come from countries including Argentina, Australia, Cameroon, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, England, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Norway, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, and Uganda. Residencies generally begin on the 1st of each month and end on the second to last day of each month. If a residency is for two weeks, it will begin on the 1st or 16-17th of each month, and end on the 14-15th or second to last day of the month. There is no charge for the residency, and all food is provided. Outside of the Early Career Artist, Deaf Artists, & Public Artist programs, additional funding is not available at this time. Residents must arrange for their own transportation to the center, or to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, or to the train station in Red Wing. Anderson Center at Tower View's Residency Program was established by a working poet to support other artists and continues to be led by administrative staff with hands-on experience in the creative process. Anderson Center trusts artists to best use their time to benefit their own work and reach their own goals. The expectation is that the program's cohort model and distinctive setting, along with the gift of time and space, generates significant advancements in residents' work. As an interdisciplinary arts organization, Anderson Center embraces artists who are diverse in every way. Since its inception, the organization has intentionally worked with artists representing a wide range of disciplines, with the belief that the exchange of ideas is generative. The residency program supports artists from around the world, representing a wide range of cultures, races, sexual orientations and genders. Anderson intentionally works to make space for people and ideas to comfortably come together and operates with a spirit of welcome for all. For participating artists, the Residency Program creates connections within artist cohorts, as well as with other creatives and community members in Red Wing. The goal is that these relationships outlast the duration of the residency visit. The organization believes that the environment and resources of Tower View, along with fellowship and an exchange of ideas across disciplines, generates inspiration and new directions for the work artists create while in residence.
