In 2012, the brutal gang rape on a Delhi bus of a 23 year old medical student, Jyoti Singh, who later died from her injuries, made international headlines and ignited protests and riots that demanded attention from the rest of the world on the issues of sexual assault and violence against women. Today Jyoti's story makes headlines again: Indian authorities have blocked the domestic broadcast of the powerful new documentary INDIA'S DAUGHTER, by BAFTA award winning filmmaker Leslee Udwin. Bringing international attention to the film's story, publications such as the Guardian, New York Times, BBC, Washington Post, CNN and Al Jazeera have been quick to report as this situation unfolds. Originally scheduled to broadcast on BBC Four's Storyvillefor International Women's Day on March 8, due to the urgency of the film, it will be broadcast in the UK tonight!
Women Make Movies 2015 New Release INDIA'S DAUGHTER by Leslee Udwinwill be available from WMM later this month, and is available for pre-order NOW. With exclusive access, Udwin goes behind prison walls to interview the rapists and further exposes an institutionalized view of women as second-class, undesirable, citizens, a mindset which leads to such heinous crimes. An impassioned plea for change, INDIA'S DAUGHTER pays tribute to a remarkable and inspiring young woman and explores the compelling human stories behind the incident and the political ramifications throughout India.
