Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/WikiturgyNYC

New and experienced Wikipedians are invited to come together to create, edit, and expand Wikipedia articles on under- or unsung theatre artists--with a focus on artists who are queer, women, of color, or otherwise underrepresented--as part of a worldwide Wikiturgy Edit-a-Thon. Participating in this event is a way to support artists whose work you know, admire, and feel should have a more publicly visible space online--or to discover new artists and new histories of performance in the Americas. This event is open to all, but RSVP is required.
This New York City branch of the worldwide Wikiturgy 2015 event. For why we are doing this, see this article in HowlRound.

SPOILED dives beneath the unspoken truths of fathers and sons, brothers and lovers - both in America and India - in this solo play that uncovers the tangled, messy roots of violence against women by embodying the male point of view. Ripped from headlines that dominate the news in New York and New Delhi, this timely play grapples with burning issues such as military sexual assaults, college frat parties, impotent jobless boys, vulnerable child brides and infanticide. Through a lens that is compassionate yet clear-eyed, SPOILED reveals how rigid gender roles box in both sexes, with devastating consequences for all.

ADVOCACYAdvocacy

Enact legislation guaranteeing women equal access & opportunity for employment in government funded arts organizations.

Legislation should be enacted whereby any arts organization or institution that is receiving city, state or federal funding should be mandated to allocate an equitable portion of that funding to women artists, thereby ensuring that they receive grants and/or employment opportunities that are traditionally denied them. For example, in the American Theatre women receive less than 20% of production opportunities nationwide. With this new legislation, women theatre artists across the board-playwrights, directors, designers, etc. -would have a fair shot at working and/or creating in their chosen field. Commercial producers will continue to produce whomever they choose-man or woman. But, when government monies are involved there should be a mandate for parity in the disbursement of those dollars.

MEMBER CORNERMEMBER

A Fairly Fractured Tale
Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Snow White are triplets who are stolen by an angry witch.  When she casts an evil spell, each sister is catapulted into her own fractured fairytale -- Rapunzel craves junk food, Cinderella has self-esteem issues, Snow White is allergic to apples, and each dreams of being rescued by a handsome Prince.  Will they be saved?  Of course!  Beau, Barry, and Burly Bob may be a little more bashful and bumbling than bright, but with the help of the Fairy Tailor and some magic spells, they all live happily ever after!

Three Times Fast is a new musical with book and lyrics by Naomi Matlow and music and lyrics by Teresa Lotz. The show follows the coming of age of fifteen year old Olivia Klemons as she wades through the stress of high school, her mother's remarriage, a move to a new house and her fresh diagnosis with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  As Olivia faces her deepest fears through therapy with Dr. West, she uncovers strength she never knew she had. Through Olivia's struggles and recoveries, her family members contemplate the habits that they have created to help them get through the day with a feeling of greater control over life's uncertainties.
