We mourn the passing of leslie Shreve, a member of LPTW for more than ten years. Shreve was a bright light that never lost her joie de vivre despite personal health battles with Parkinson's (her husband) and cancer (herself). As an actor, announcer, voiceover artist, and narrator, Shreve was also an Emmy Award-winning make-up artist. Her activism included service on the national board for SAG-AFTRA and the Grants Committee for the Episcopal Actors Guild, to name a few. She was also a Lamb; a member of the Dutch Treat Club and more. Her circle of friends was enormous and are already missing her. Our tribute to her life and work continues below.


leslie Shreve was a bright light, a perpetually radiant spirit, who never lost her joie de vivre or her huge smile, even as she valiantly stood by her husband as he slowly lost his battle with Parkinson's (he died almost exactly four years ago), and then herself battled cancer the last few years.

A graduate of the Theatre Department at Ithaca College, leslie received an outstanding actor award from Business Week for her portrayal of Harpo Marx. She also played Mabel in The Pajama Game; Mrs Diana Trapes in The Beggars' Opera; Eva Tanquay in A Salute to the Palace Theatre; Rossignol in Marat/Sade, and Mrs Banks in Sunday in the Park - where she "rolled 'em in the aisles with laughter." A cable television pioneer with her award winning children's program, Leslie the Shreve, she also played Kay Sybers in HBO's Autopsy 8.

She was primarily known for her announcing and voiceovers. She narrated an exhibit for the Smithsonian; created sounds for many furry and oddball characters; and doubled voices in re-creations of programs from radio's Golden Age for the Friends of Old Time Radio.

leslie served long term as National Chair for the Women's Committees for both AFTRA and SAG, and then for SAG-AFTRA. In that capacity, she was one of the earliest board members of the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, and served three different terms as Co-President. She was the first, and thus far only, Past President to be named as Special Advisor to the Coalition. Her activism included serving on the National Boards of SAG-AFTRA and AFTRA; the Council as well as the Grants Committee for the Episcopal Actors Guild; and the steering committee for the St. Lukes/Roosevelt Hospital's Crime Victims Treatment Center.

Along with being a member of LPTW, she was a Lamb; a member of the Dutch Treat Club; ATAS; the Blue Hill Troupe; The Village Light Opera Group (Lifetime Honoree), the Original NYC Bad Girls, and The Group. Because of all these associations, her circles of friends and colleagues was enormous, and so many are hurting now, and already missing her.

A natural born multi-tasker, leslie was a recipient of the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding MakeUp Design and also served the members of IATSE 798 as their Television Trustee. She designed make-up for stage, film, daytime and primetime TV, rock shows, industrials, commercials, news, sports, press junkets, archival interviews, and was the contributing author on this subject for The Handbook of Private Television (McGraw-Hill).

She also directed the Documentary Healing Ground Zero, which included a night time tour in the pit.

leslie Caroline Shreve departed this world's stage on March 31, 2024, at the age of 79. leslie (she prefers lower case) left this message for those in her life's circle:
"I've had a terrific life, and I thank each of you who have been a part of it. I'm so glad that I had the courage to stay in New York after that first lonely year. I'm grateful to have been cast by Teleprompter Cable TV in the show that turned into the acclaimed "Leslie the Shreve" with stories for Many Lands. I designed the set, drew the graphics, wrote and sang the songs, and met my wonderful future husband - award-winning Television Director Joel Willis"
After completing her Bachelors in Fine Arts/Drama at Ithaca College, leslie successfully and happily pursued her dreams in New York City. She enjoyed a fulfilling professional career as an actor, announcer, voice-over artist, make-up artist (Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Make-Up Design for "All My Children"), and advocate for those who share her craft. leslie reflected:
"I've had many touching reviews from my theater work but two reviews which reflect my life are "you are such a passionate person always looking for ways to do things for others" (this is my intent in this life) and "thank you for adding magic to my childhood."
leslie served on National Boards of SAG and AFTRA (later SAG-AFTRA) where she was long time chair of the Women's Committee. She served on EAG Council -The Episcopal Actors Guild – (a charitable help organization for performers of all faiths and none and was quietly chair of their Grants Committee); the Council for The Lambs; St. Lukes/Roosevelt Hospital's Crime Victims Treatment Center (Steering Committee); and IATSE 798 (Television Trustee).
She was also a member of the Blue Hill Troupe, the Dutch Treat Club, The Village Light Opera Group (Lifetime Honoree), the Original NYC Bad Girls, The Rehearsal Club, and The Players.
As past President, she was most proud of the growth of the New York Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts and Media, Inc which she championed since its inception and was named as Special Advisor.
Recalling her personal life with her beloved Joel, leslie said:
"Together Joel and I built a solar house in the rocky soil of the Saugatuck River on Glacial Moraine in the Weston Connecticut Woods. We were flower children. We didn't want to tear down trees so we built vertically among them. From the parking lot we built a 102 ft bridge which went into the second floor of our home. Our pool had a black lining. We changed plans for a balcony, hammered shut our "door to nowhere" and had many fun parties and intimate times there.
Joel and I loved sailing in the Caribbean where we learned to scuba dive. That was a true joy, and continues to inspire my dreams!
Joel's decent into Parkinson's took 15 mysterious years and I loved and missed all aspects of him."
leslie is survived by her sister Raleigh Orth (Don), her three nephews and their families, and by her brother Dana Shreve (Lynn). She is ever grateful for her amazing and loving Family. And at the end of her life leslie lived in NYC with a view to the West and of her several betta fish.

SAG-AFTRA Remembers Former National Board Member leslie Shreve

Remembering Leslie Shreve
March 31, 2024

SAG-AFTRA celebrates the life of longtime former National Board member leslie Shreve, a current New York Local Board member, who passed away March 31, 2024, at the age of 79.

Shreve joined SAG in 1970 and AFTRA in 1975. She served in union leadership for over 40 years, beginning in 1980 as an AFTRA National Board member. She was elected to Screen Actors Guild's National Board in 1981 and continued serving on the SAG-AFTRA National Board from the 2012 merger until 2019.

"A performer, altruist and activist, leslie Shreve will be remembered for her commitment to women and the performing arts as well as her broad, beaming smile," said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. "She exemplified what it means to be a SAG-AFTRA member, and our union is deeply grateful for her decades of service."

"leslie Shreve was a warm, tireless and inspiring advocate for women, artists, performers and workers everywhere," said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. "Serving on the SAG-AFTRA National Women's Committee, she led the charge in calling for industry colleagues to join the fight for reproductive rights. Her dedication to advocacy and refusal to be discouraged by obstacles has earned her a place in union history. She will be missed."

A champion for women's equity and a dedicated and eager volunteer for over four decades, Shreve brought her exuberant energy to the boardroom as national chair for the Women's Committees for both SAG and AFTRA. The magnitude of her passion for labor and unionism was demonstrated in her fierce advocacy for merger. For SAG-AFTRA, she was co-chair of the National Women's Committee, chair of the New York Local Women's Committee, and served on additional committees, including the National Diversity Advisory Group, the National Honors and Tributes Committee, and the National Convention Advisory Review Committee.

She enjoyed a fulfilling professional career as an actor, announcer, voiceover artist, and makeup artist, receiving a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup Design in 1998 for her work on All My Children. Shreve was a Television Trustee for IATSE Local 798 and was also on the council of both the Episcopal Actors Guild and The Lambs, as well as a past president of the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, which she championed since its inception and was named as Special Advisor.

Dear NYWIFT Community,

New York Women in Film & Television mourns the loss of beloved member leslie Shreve, who passed away peacefully at home on Easter Sunday after a recurrence of cancer. Friends note she was still a joyous presence even during her last few weeks in hospice care.

The first time I met leslie, she was in the conference room at what used to be the NYWIFT Headquarters on 39th Street. She was looking out the window and smiling. When I greeted her, she said, "You don't know this, but we will be good friends because I love this organization and we have much to do together. I represent different organizations, but today I represent SAG-AFTRA…" and she explained the mission and the merging of the two unions. It was a productive meeting. The second time I saw her I was heading onto the stage at SVA. Her small arm reached out of the stage curtains and handed me a bottle of water. She smiled and said, "You see! You never know when I will pop up." I was startled and laughed. That is the warm and loving person she was. Always smiling and always willing to help.

The NYWIFT team feels her loss very deeply.

While "she lit up every room she walked into" might sound like a cliché, there is truly no better way to describe leslie's presence. So many of us knew her for her warmth, huge smile, wit, effervescence, and endless enthusiasm for life and for the arts. At NYWIFT, she was a mainstay at our networking events, a champion of supporting women artists, and a frequent volunteer for the Muse Awards as recently as 2019. At Muse she was affectionately known as Captain leslie, frequently leading our security department to everyone's delight. Despite her small stature, leslie was not to be messed with and she led the security team with humor and grace.

After every event – and even sometimes just out of the blue – leslie never failed to send individual emails to NYWIFT staffers to let them know what a great job they did and how much she loved them and the organization. Her zest for life and deep care for the people around her were one of a kind.

Community was a central part of leslie's life. In addition to being a member of NYWIFT, she was also part of the The Players Club, Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, the Dutch Treat Club, The Rehearsal Club, and the Village Light Opera Group, to name just a few.

Yesterday, our friends at The Players offered this insight into leslie's life and career:

"leslie grew up in Erie, Pa., graduating in 1963 from Strong Vincent High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts/Drama from Ithaca College and moved to New York City, where she started her career as an actor and makeup artist.

leslie was also a director, announcer, and energetic activist for theatre artists. She served on the boards of many organizations, including SAG and AFTRA (and the merged guild), where she was the longtime chair of the Women's Committee. She was also on the Episcopal Actors Guild Council and chair of the EAG grants committee; on the steering committee of the St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital's Crime Victims Treatment Center; on the Council of The Lambs; and television trustee of Local 798 of IATSE.

As a makeup artist, leslie received a Daytime Emmy for her work on All My Children. Her imaginative costumes at Players events were as much her trademark as the lower-case "l" that started her given name.

In 1974, she became 'Leslie the Shreve' in the sparkling cable TV variety show of the same name. She designed the set, drew the graphics, wrote, and sang the songs, and perhaps most importantly met her future husband, the director Joel Willis, to whom she was married until his death in 2020, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Self-described flower children, they built a solar house in Connecticut and enjoyed sailing and scuba diving in the Caribbean."

 

 

leslie is survived by her sister, Raleigh Orth; her brother, Dana Shreve; and three nephews and their families. NYWIFT extends its sympathy to her family, friends, and all in our community whose lives she touched – there are so many. We are comforted knowing that she is finally reunited with her beloved Joel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition, of which she was a proud founder, past president, and special advisor. 

A joyous presence even during these last few weeks on hospice, leslie took the time to write her own obituary, which we encourage you to read here.

New York Screenwriting Awards 

New York Screenwriting Awards, is an international screenplay competition based in New York. Screenwriters who would need recognition to be able to contact agents and producers can submit their screenplays. New York Screenwriting Awards has four editions per year. EVQ promotes the work of queer film and fosters a highly inclusive environment for all artists. You don't have to be LGBTQ+ to submit your film but you do have to be Queer!

SF Queer Film Festival 

Our festival is looking for ground-breaking indie films by under-represented Queer storytellers. Unlike the older LGBTQIA+ film festivals, we do not adhere to the status quo and offer an alternate platform for out-of-the-box thinkers and content creators. We do not disqualify films based on premiere status or date of completion. We select films on merit and not based on the names attached to the project. This festival is created by filmmakers for filmmakers.

Women's Comedy Film Festival in Atlanta 

The Women's Comedy Film Festival in Atlanta is a theatrical screening event in Atlanta for independent films featuring female filmmakers, actors, directors, writers and producers from all over the world. This is an amazing opportunity to showcase the talent of female directors, writers, actors, and everything in between right here in one of the world's fastest growing film communities. The Women's Comedy Film Festival also recognizes exceptional filmmaking and screenwriting with awards and nominations by our judging panel. Submit your film if you meet AT LEAST ONE of the following requirements:

San Diego Asian Film Festival 

Since 2000, the San Diego Asian Film Festival has been one of the premier platforms for Asian American cinema and has grown into the largest showcase of Asian and Pacific Islander cinema in the western United States. The festival is borne out of the love for independent film and the desire to showcase the diverse Pan Asian experience through film and other arts. SDAFF supports both Asian and non-Asian artists by giving them a venue to showcase their work, and it gives the community access to quality films that otherwise would never show in San Diego.

o When/Where: November 7-16 

o Deadline: April 22 (Regular Deadline), June 3 (Late Deadline), June 24 (Extended Deadline: Shorts), July 15 (Extended Deadline: Features)

o Application Fee: $40-$60

o Eligibility: Films/videos entered into competition must be directed or principally acted by an artist of Asian or Pacific Islander descent, or contain subject matter relating to Asian or Pacific Islander cultures or communities. Clarify questions of eligibility prior to submission of entry.

  • Entries must have been completed after August 1, 2022. For feature-length films, the date of first public premiere (if any) must be after October 1, 2022.

  • Feature length entries cannot have been previously exhibited in San Diego at another film festival or commercial venue, or be available for broadcast, home video, or online for American audiences, before Nov. 20, 2023.

  • Each project entered into competition must pay an entry fee. There is no limit to the number of qualifying entries by any entrant so long as an entry form and fee accompanies each entry.

  • Non-English dialogue must be subtitled in English.

  • Films/videos cannot be re-entered into competition if previously rejected by the San Diego Asian Film Festival.

  • Entrants shall obtain all licenses, royalties, and permits necessary to present their work. Entry will assume all costs arising from the use of patented, trademarked, franchised, or copyrighted music, materials, devices, processes, or dramatic rights used in production of work.

  • Short films previously exhibited on the Internet are eligible for entry.

Los Angeles Black Film Festival 

The LA Black Film Festival is a bi-annual film festival that celebrates independent Black filmmakers and seeks to elevate Black voices and stories in the film community. CineKink

An organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, CineKink is seeking films and videos that explore and celebrate the wide diversity of sexuality for our annual NYC-based festival and screening tour. Returning after a pandemic-inspired hiatus, we're sticking our toes back out into the festival world, as we celebrate our 19th anniversary in 2022! Currently planned for May 2022, the specially-curated CineKink NYC will include a short film competition, audience choice awards and an adult industry showcase, with a national screening tour to follow. Our hope is to offer in-person festivities and screenings, as long as it's possible to do so safely and affordably, enhanced by virtual presentations to expand our offerings. Cutting across orientations, topics covered at CineKink have included — but are by no means limited to — BDSM, leather and fetish, swinging, non-monogamy and polyamory, roleplay and gender bending, sex work and sex geekery. We're looking to blur some boundaries and will be considering offerings of any length and genre drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, with works ranging from documentary to drama, camp comedy to artsy experimental, mildly spicy to quite explicit — and everything in between. Basically, as long as it involves consenting adults, just about anything celebrating sex as a right of self expression is fair game. (Far be it from us to define "kink" — if you think your work might make sense in this context, do send it along. Nonetheless, please read ALL guidelines before submitting, and make sure your work fits with our sex-focused niche!!)

The Her Vision International Film Festival

Our main goal is equality and empowerment in the cinematic arts. The Her Vision International Film Festival is here to highlight the achievements of women and female-identifying directors, writers, editors and producers. In addition to our mission of equality, we also underscore the importance of unity. For example, our first year's Feature Film Winner was a female producer/writer with a male director. The Atlanta Women's Film Festival is a live screening of short films and table read events that takes place in Atlanta, GA. The Female Eye is a competitive international women directors' film festival . The Female Eye is a competitive international women directors' film festival that was established in 2001, as a not-for-profit organization. The 20th anniversary returned LIVE at TIFF Bell Lightbox, June 2022. We look forward to the 21st edition! The Female Eye showcases high-caliber independent films that illuminate the best of debut, emerging, and established women directors from around the globe. Our Script Development Program is open to both men and women. FeFF is big on audience engagement and networking. Audience Q&As follow each film program. The Women's Independent Film Festival 

The Women's Independent Film Festival is a chance to share and celebrate greatness in the world of female filmmaking. Our incredible community ranges from directors, to producers, to screenwriters, to actors, to content creators! Whatever the medium: We build this festival to shed light, deliver opportunity and celebrate the achievements of women in the world of filmmaking, storytelling and beyond! California Women's Film Festival (Winter) 

The California Women's Film Festival is deeply honored to celebrate women filmmakers, artists and writers by providing a showcase and networking forum in the heart of Hollywood. The CWFF understands how important it is to hear and see the educated, entertaining and diverse stories of women from around the globe. We provide a platform so these voices can be heard and shared with audiences that want to be inspired. The California Women's Film Festival accepts all projects that have at least one woman in one of the key production positions: (Producer, Director, Writer, Cinematographer, Editor, Lead Actress, Etc......). NYWIFT Member Screening Series 


The New York Women in Film & Television Member Screening Series is a unique opportunity for NYWIFT members to showcase their work in a theatrical setting. The series features a diverse array of projects from both established and emerging filmmakers in celebration of our community of women filmmakers. The NYWIFT member screening is open to all current members of NYWIFT. Films are selected and notified on a rolling basis for screening in the series. Due to high demand, screening is not guaranteed though we do our best to accommodate as many members as possible. Films may be short or feature length and may be paired with other film(s) for the screening. All genres are welcome. Projects must feature at least one current NYWIFT member in a key creative role. LA Independent Women in Film Awards 

LA Independent Women Film Awards focuses on international and U.S. film and script projects of all genres. Jerome Foundation Arts Fellowship 

Jerome Hill Artist Fellowships support early career Minnesota- and New York City-based generative artists who take creative risks in exploring, expanding, imagining, or re-imagining creative practices and experiences; reclaiming or reviving traditional forms in original ways; and/or questioning, challenging, or disrupting cultural norms. This three-year Fellowship supports artists who embrace their roles as part of a larger community of artists and citizens, and consciously work with a sense of service and responsibility. Support is directed to early career artists, which Jerome Foundation defines as within their 2nd–10th year as a generative artist. Fellows receive $60,000 over three consecutive years ($20,000 each year) to support their time and expenses for the creation of new work, artistic development and/or professional artistic career development. The Foundation expects to award a total of 45 fellowships across 7 artistic fields.

Creative Capital Award 25 

For our 25th Anniversary, Creative Capital welcomes innovative and original new project proposals in visual arts, performing arts, film/moving image, technology, literature, multidisciplinary, and socially engaged forms. Applications open on March 4, 2024, and the deadline for submitting is April 4, 2024 at 4PM ET. A link to the application portal will be added to this page on March 4, 2024 at 10AM ET. The Creative Capital Award provides unrestricted project grants which can be drawn down over a multi-year period, bespoke professional development services, and community-building opportunities. Sloan Distribution Grant

The Sloan Distribution Grant is a $50,000 grant awarded by Film Independent to a film that is entering its distribution phase. Eligible films must depict themes, stories and characters grounded in real science, technology or economics.

o Eligibility: Applicants must be the producer of a narrative fiction feature film.The film should prominently feature science, mathematics and/or technology in the story and/or have a leading character that is a scientist, engineer or mathematician. Panavision New Filmmaker Program

Panavision believes in helping students and beginning filmmakers achieve their dreams. More than 25 years ago, Panavision launched the New Filmmaker Program, an ongoing grant program that loans camera packages to film schools, training programs, and independent filmmakers – at little or no charge. Panavision's commitment to the industry's future provides student and beginning filmmakers the opportunity to work with professional grade equipment early in their careers.

o Eligibility: Submit your proposals at least two months before you plan to shoot. Due to the high demand for Panavision cameras and equipment, it is essential that you plan ahead and contact us early.

The New Filmmaker Program does not discriminate as to the nature of the project that can receive equipment grants. Any form, from experimental to documentary to musical to traditional narrative, is welcome.

Camera grants are available only for productions in the United States. Customs laws make transportation of cameras out of the US prohibitive. No exceptions.

The New Filmmaker Program will not allow cameras to be used on projects that perpetuate racial or sexual stereotypes and prejudices. Pornography is absolutely unacceptable.

Grant recipients must obtain insurance from an outside insurance agent. Students can generally have the school issue the necessary policies. Plan ahead! This can take several weeks to implement. The process varies from school to school, so check with your film department. Productions that are not attached to a school must obtain the necessary insurance from an independent broker. Panavision must receive proof of insurance two weeks prior to prep dates. EQUIPMENT WILL NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING WITHOUT PROPER INSURANCE. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Approved proposals are subject to a service fee for equipment.

Catapult Film Fund

Catapult Film Fund provides development funding to documentary filmmakers who have a compelling story to tell, have secured access to their story, and are ready to shoot and edit a piece for production fundraising purposes. Our mission is to enable filmmakers to develop their films to the next level at a moment where funding is hard to find.

o Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Catapult does not fund student films.

Documentaries must be 28 minutes or longer in length. We do not fund series.

Animation is okay. Documentary/narrative hybrids will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Development funds must specifically be used for the process of completing a fundraising piece, which may include writing, shooting and editing once story and characters are in place.

Applicants must own the copyright of their production, and have artistic, budgetary and editorial control over their project.

Applicants should preferably have previous film or television production experience in a principal role (director, co-director, producer, co-producer) as demonstrated by submitting a previously completed work sample.

Applicants who have not yet produced or directed their own feature length documentary should demonstrate that they will be working with an experienced filmmaker in a principal role.

Catapult only makes grants to 501(c)(3) organizations. In most cases, this will mean getting a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor for the project.
