VLT’s 2020 Annual New Works Competition

Live & In Color is looking for playwrights, composers, and lyricists of color and/or other underrepresented communities interested in developing their new musical or play. Ensemble Studio Theatre/Sloan Project 
The EST/Sloan Project commissions, develops and presents new works delving into how we view and are affected by the scientific world. These plays examine the struggles and challenges scientists and engineers face from moral issues to the consequences of their discoveries.

The inaugural She ATL Summer Theater Festival is produced by SheNYC Arts, and will accept 3-4 full-length plays and musicals by women-identifying writers who reside in Georgia.

Sundog Theatre’s  Scenes From The Staten Island Ferry 2020
Sundog Theatre’s 18th annual presentation of new and original one-act plays about our favorite boats, the Staten Island Ferries.

Panglossian Productions
What are you working on?  What are you excited about?  What would you like to discuss and develop with a creative team?  Bring it on. Panglossian is seeking new full-length plays for our new global/local developmental reading series, Plays in Progress. We work with writers across the globe to develop work locally here in Williamsburg. Selected playwrights will discuss their goals for the script with our staff, attend one or two discussion/rehearsals, and participate in a public reading, which will be streamed online. Writers who are not local may participate virtually over Skype.

Playwrights Horizons
Playwrights Horizons accepts unsolicited manuscripts of full-length, original plays by living American writers. As a writers’ theater who believes there are as many distinctive styles and voices as there are playwrights, we remain open to as wide a range of plays — and approaches to playwriting — as possible. We are looking for idiosyncratic, accomplished, original theatrical voices.

Urban Stages Emerging Playwright Award
Our $500 Emerging Playwright Award (coupled with press coverage) is given to playwrights who show excellence and dedication throughout this process – from development to the stage. Out of hundreds of submissions a year, we select 15-20 plays for readings. From these, we select 1-3 plays annually to go on to our workshopping phase. Our workshops are meant to prepare a play for our Off-Broadway stage. From our workshops, we select 1-2 plays for full productions, complete with a playwright’s contract and compensation (separate from the award).

Production Carpenter Hudson Valley Shakespeare
The Production Carpenter works closely with the Facilities Manager, Props Master and other members of the Production Staff to build, load-in, run, and load-out all three mainstage productions in our 2020 Season.  This position reports to the Director of Production.

An American In Paris Company Manager
Big League Productions Inc., a veteran producer of national and international tours, is seeking an experienced Company Manager for the upcoming tour of An American Paris. The Company Manager will be primary point of contact for all employees traveling with the tour and will be responsible for a variety of tasks in finance, human resources and general administration.

Signature Theatre Teaching Artist
Signature Theatre is looking for experienced, sensitive and innovative teaching artists for satellite Signature in the Schools workshops in Northern Virginia schools. Teaching artists will use theatrical skills to prepare high school students from a wide variety of classroom settings attending field trip performances of the 2019-20 Signature in the Schools production, which explores what it means to be a citizen and the power of the vote in America.

NETworks Production Manager
We are looking for a highly efficient and technically skilled Production Manager. The Production Manager will manage 3-4 tours per year, and must have excellent communication skills. The PM is responsible for realizing the vision of the creative team including the Executive Producer, Director, Choreographer, and Designers. The PM hires, manages, and oversees all production staff and production elements for assigned tours. The PM must maintain a high level of artistic integrity while meeting the budget and schedule requirements and ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all artistic and production personnel. Additionally, the PM collaborates with the Senior Director of Production Management and other Production Department members to develop ongoing training and development systems, as well as department operational procedures and processes. Success in the role requires people skills, the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously, attention to detail, a deep passion for theatre, and the ability to work independently while communicating effectively within the organization, with creative teams, and partners.

The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists
The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists is a juried cash and production grant given annually to support the early work and career of a deserving musical theatre librettist. It commemorates the life and work of playwright/librettist Eric H. Weinberger (1950-2017), who was a Drama Desk Award nominee for Best Book of a Musical (Wanda’s World), and the playwright/librettist of Class Mothers ’68, which earned Pricilla Lopez a Drama Desk Award nomination.

SubletSeries@HERE Program
This creative curated rental program has allowed many upstart companies and emerging artists to realize their full artistic vision on a small budget. The program provides subsidized performance and rehearsal space, technical assistance, and administrative support, including a fully staffed box office. SubletSeries@HERE artists can also access equipment that is not typically available in venues our size such as video projectors, wireless microphones, color scrollers—all for free or at subsidized rates. We accept applications from artists all over the world for the opportunity to show work.

The Bush Films
The Bush Films is a monthly intersectional film series based in New York dedicated to showcasing work about and for queer women, feminists, trans and non-binary people. The Valley Film festival
Now in its 20th year, VFF supports local and international voices that advance storytelling, while furthering the education, production, and exhibition of film. In 2010, the City of Los Angeles recognized our cultural contributions with the city seal, and in 2018 the California State Senate stood with us #UnitedByFilm in our efforts to practice conscious programming to unite the international film community.

African American Women In Cinema and ON! Channel Distribution
The Streaming Platform The ON! Channel and the prestigious non-profit organization African American Women In Cinema (AAWIC) is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for Women filmmakers and Content Creators from all over the world. Starting today through December 31, 2019 Filmmakers and content creators who join the African American Women In Cinema organization will have the opportunity to submit their Completed content for distribution consideration for the ON! Uptown Women’s Festival 
The uptown women’s+ film festival of New York is a festival to celebrate all women+ filmmakers from New York City and around the world. The festival looks to bring original stories told through the female lens to the community of Uptown Manhattan.

Freelance Camera Operator
We are looking for a Freelance Camera Operator to back fill Staff Operators who may be on vacation, out sick or assigned to additional programming beyond their normal duties. Freelance Camera Operators will perform the same or similar duties as staff operators to include Robotic, Pedestal, Jib and Handheld cameras. You also help with set changes, movement of set pieces and gear/equipment.

The Film Independent Camera Grant
The Film Independent Camera Grant is a program for Film Independent Fellows and alumni. Film Independent will select a qualified filmmaker, on a rolling basis, who will be loaned a digital camera body (based on availability) to use for their narrative or documentary short, feature film production or web series. The grant includes an ARRI Alexa SXT Plus camera body OR a Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K.

    • Applicants must be the director, producer or cinematographer of a narrative or documentary short, feature film production or web series.
    • Applicants must be either: A) alumni of Film Independent’s Artist Development programs; B) alumni of the LA Film Festival; C) a past Film Independent Spirit Award Nominee; or D) solicited by Film Independent. Grant recipients must show proof of production insurance.
    • Camera body will be awarded for prep and principle photography. Dates must be provided in the application.

The Film Fund
Write one sentence that (1) describes the premise of your narrative short film and (2) explains how you'll use the funding to complete the film if you're chosen as a winner. In short, pitch your narrative short film in a sentence. We're an alternative to tedious and expensive film grants and competitions, and we've created a community that supports films at every step in the process. Depending on the project, we're there before the writing even starts all the way through submitting to a top-tier film festival. Our fund covers almost any expense you incur while making your film.

Pacific Islanders In Communications Media Fund
The Media Fund is PIC's standing funding initiative, which provides funds for single non-fiction projects about the indigenous Pacific Islander experience for three critical phases of production: Research and Development (R&D), Production, and Post-production.  Projects applying to the Media Fund must be intended for national public television broadcast, and therefore must be able to enter into a production agreement - this is not your typical grant.

Sloan Distribution Grant
The Sloan Distribution Grant is a $50,000 grant awarded by Film Independent to a film that is entering its distribution phase. Eligible films must depict themes, stories and characters grounded in real science, technology or economics.

    • Applicants must be the producer of a narrative fiction feature film.
    • The film should prominently feature science, mathematics and/or technology in the story and/or have a leading character that is a scientist, engineer or mathematician.
    • Films with innovative marketing and distribution plans are encouraged to apply.
    • All submitted films must be at least 70 minutes in length.
    • Applicants must be legal residents of the United States.
    • Film must be entering its distribution phase.
Panavision New Filmmaker Program
Panavision believes in helping students and beginning filmmakers achieve their dreams. More than 25 years ago, Panavision launched the New Filmmaker Program, an ongoing grant program that loans camera packages to film schools, training programs, and independent filmmakers – at little or no charge. Panavision’s commitment to the industry's future provides student and beginning filmmakers the opportunity to work with professional grade equipment early in their careers.

    • Submit your proposals at least two months before you plan to shoot. Due to the high demand for Panavision cameras and equipment, it is essential that you plan ahead and contact us early.
    • Proposal materials will not be returned.
    • The New Filmmaker Program does not discriminate as to the nature of the project that can receive equipment grants. Any form, from experimental to documentary to musical to traditional narrative, is welcome.
    • Camera grants are available only for productions in the United States. Customs laws make transportation of cameras out of the US prohibitive. No exceptions.
    • The New Filmmaker Program will not allow cameras to be used on projects that perpetuate racial or sexual stereotypes and prejudices. Pornography is absolutely unacceptable.
    • Grant recipients must obtain insurance must from an outside insurance agent. Students can generally have the school issue the necessary policies. Plan ahead! This can take several weeks to implement. The process varies from school to school, so check with your film department. Productions that are not attached to a school must obtain the necessary insurance from an independent broker. Panavision must receive proof of insurance two weeks prior to prep dates. EQUIPMENT WILL NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING WITHOUT PROPER INSURANCE. NO EXCEPTIONS!

    • Anamorphic lenses are not available via the New Filmmaker Program

Catapult Film Fund
Catapult Film Fund provides development funding to documentary filmmakers who have a compelling story to tell, have secured access to their story, and are ready to shoot and edit a piece for production fundraising purposes. Our mission is to enable filmmakers to develop their films to the next level at a moment where funding is hard to find.

    • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Catapult does not fund student films.
    • Documentaries must be 28 minutes or longer in length. We do not fund series.
    • Animation is okay. Documentary/narrative hybrids will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Development funds must specifically be used for the process of completing a fundraising piece, which may include writing, shooting and editing once story and characters are in place.
    • Applicants must own the copyright of their production, and have artistic, budgetary and editorial control over their project.
    • Applicants should preferably have previous film or television production experience in a principal role (director, co-director, producer, co-producer) as demonstrated by submitting previously completed work sample. -Applicants who have not yet produced or directed their own feature length documentary should demonstrate that they will be working with an experienced filmmaker in a principal role.
    • Catapult only makes grants to 501(c)(3) organizations. In most cases, this will mean getting a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor for the project.   • 2020 Documentary Edit and Story Lab
    The Documentary Edit and Story Lab supports filmmakers with nonfiction feature films in post-production. Lab fellows advance their projects through rigorous creative exploration and discussion of story structure and character development with world-class advisors. Filmmaking teams work closely with director and editor advisors and staff in a dynamic and supportive environment, and after the lab they receive ongoing creative and strategic support. To take best advantage of the lab, teams should be at a place in their edit at which creative exploration with trusted advisors will advance their project and bring a greater clarity of vision. First-time feature directors as well as mid-career artists are encouraged to apply.

    • Eligibility: The lab is open to feature nonfiction projects in mid- to late post-production (from assembly through rough cut). There is no restriction of genre or storytelling style—we are looking for projects with a bold, contemporary vision made by courageous storytellers. Ideal candidates are directors and editors who are eager to engage in a collaborative, exploratory environment and are receptive to feedback and experimentation. Projects that are far along in the edit, for whom creative input and exploration would be detrimental to the creative process, are not ideal candidates. Ideally, projects should have an editor attached at the time of application and should attend the lab as a director-editor team. (Projects for which the director is also the editor will also be considered.) Ideally, projects will attend the lab at a late assembly/rough cut stage. At the time of application, you may submit edited sequences, specific scenes, or character assemblies. The material submitted in combination with the written application should reflect your current creative vision and challenges and explain the edit process as you work towards an assembly/cut.

    The Fiore Center
    The Joseph A. Fiore Art Center at Rolling Acres Farm is a program of Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) that actively connects the creative worlds of farming, conservation and the arts.
    The purpose of the Fiore Art Center is to stimulate and advance the dialogue between human and environment within the context of agriculture and today’s culture at large. We hope to instill passion for preservation through the arts, create awareness and build community.
