WOMENARTS MOVES TO BERKELEY

After five years in San Francisco, WomenArts is moving to the neighboring town of Berkeley, California.  Please note our new mailing address and phone number at the bottom of this email.
We are very excited about collaborating with many wonderful artists and arts organizations in our new home town and with the faculty, staff, and students at the University of California Berkeley, one of the best universities in the U.S.
If you have written to us this month and we did not respond, please try again.  It has been a hectic month of packing and unpacking, and we may have missed your email.

NORA EPHRON DIES AT 71

WomenArts joins with many others to mourn the passing of Oscar-nominated screen writer and director, Nora Ephron this past Tuesday. Ephron was one of her era’s most successful screenwriters and filmmakers, making romantic comedy hits like “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When Harry Met Sally” and "Julie and Julia."
The Washington Post commented, "As a woman in the male-dominated movie business, Ms. Ephron was a rare 'triple-hyphenate' as writer, director and producer. But making movies for and about women was a battle, at times. She observed how, to male studio moguls, 'a movie about a woman’s cure for cancer is less interesting than a movie about a man with a hangnail.'"

You can read a review of Ephron's "Julie and Julia" by Jan Lisa Huttner (aka our "Hot Pink Pen") at: www.WomenArts.org/reviews/JulieandJulia.htm

You can also read a piece about Nora Ephron by Melissa Silverstein on her Women And Hollywood blog.

June 2012 Funding Newsletters

The WomenArts Funding Newsletters for June 2012 are now online. To read them, please click on the links below.

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL UPDATE

Thanks so much to all of you who signed the Women and Hollywood petition about the lack of women directors at the Cannes Film Festival.

Also, thanks to Kay Hardy Campbell for pointing out that although there were no women in the main competition at Cannes, there were important films by women in the sidebar screenings.

In particular, we would like to congratulate Haifaa Al Mansour, the first female Saudi filmmaker, on the showing of her film, Wadjda, the first full-length feature ever shot entirely inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  Wadjda tells the story of an 11-year-old girl growing up in the suburbs of Saudi capital city Riyadh. Her dream is to get and ride a green bicycle, a treasure forbidden to women in the restrictive Islamist state. Read more>>
